Rug Seating at PLN Session on Monday
Back before I started speaking more regularly at ed tech conferences, I use to lobby pretty hard to conference planners, providing links for the constituents to my latest web tools, and explain, somewhat clumsily, why they should hire me to come and speak at their event. One of the main targets of these efforts was the Iowa Technology Education Connection. I had taught a number of workshops for various regional service centers and could tell that there were some interesting things going on — not to mention some interesting people doing them.
So here I am, at ITEC, and I have been hungrily glued to the Twitter feed I have set up for #itec in my Tweetdeck. Perhaps the most Tweeted ed tech conference I’ve seen this side of NECC (ISTE). It’s actually a bit daunting, especially as I scanned trough the program to see the sophistication of the content. But perhaps that is a good reason for me to be stepping back a bit, cutting down beneath the wires, routers, LCD, and the buzzing happening in your pockets — and say again, “It’s the literacy!”
There is much talk about media literacy, digital literacy, digital citizenship, blah blah blah — and it is all spot on. But I believe that there is just one literacy, “The skills involved in using information to accomplish your goals.” Today, I will examine what it means to be a reader when information is networked, what it means to process information, when that information is digital, and what it means to communicate when there are so many messages already out there that yours must compete for attention.
That presentation will be followed by three breakout sessions, exploring self-directed professional development, RSS (a rather geeky pres), and virtual worlds (a bare introduction). I hope that you enjoy as I am certain that I am.
