This image will suffice until I get a better Carlisle Photo
It is a pleasure to be in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, home of the first college to be founded in the recognized United States. This is a community of history and heritage and one that has obviously adapted through the tumult of the American revolution, federalist movement, and through to modern times. But, perhaps no time in its history has seen the changes we face today. Not since the invention of the printing press has the nature of information changed so dramatically. But printing’s integration into society tool centuries. The move to networked, digital, and abundant information has taken only a few years, and its nature, as a pliable environment means that innovation occurs at an ever rapid pace.
Information will be the center of my talk and what it means to be literate in today’s information environment. It’s going to sound like I’m talking about technology. You’ll see some amazing techie stuff. But what I’m working with is information, and I’m trying to answer the questions:
- What does reading look like in a networked information landscape?
- What does arithmetic look like when information is increasingly digital?
- What about writing in an info-abundant environment?
- What are our responsibilities in this new world of the bit?
I hope that you enjoy my presentation and that you will continue to think about the ideas that I share.
