Small Group Back-Channel Transcript
On March 9, 2009, the Edmonton Public Schools held a professional development day to explore and discuss literacy and technology and to a larger degree, education 2.0. After the opening keynote, small groups of local educators discussed the ideas shared, exploring basic questions about literacy and technology, and education in the 21st century.
Representatives back-channeled their conversations using the experimental back-channel tool, Knitter.
Here is a transcript of that conversation. You can insert your comments (this is a wiki page) by clicking "Edit" (above) and entering teacher as the password.

sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 11:56:08
I think that too many are making this an either/or scenario. We need to integrate technology to support real learning. There will be other ways to assess that.

Jen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:04:39
tech may not make them lazy but we need to teach them how to organize digitally
Louise (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:04:41
Visual icons are a part of the new literacies.
David harvey (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:04:47
Who does their best thinking at a computer?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:04:53
me
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:01
me, too
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:05
We need to teach students how to ethically use information.
Debbie Petkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:06
need to be able to read and write - different writing than now - texting, twittering..
David harvey (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:05:11
Me
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:13
can we post these comments on the big screen?
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:15
I don't.
Sid de Haan (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:18

Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:24
you have time to think and respond vs. talking on the phone for example
glenora (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:25
importance of critical thinking skills in navigating
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:29
but would it reallly be your own thinnking or that of someone who put their thoughts on the screen
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:48
We am responding to their thoughts
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:05:57
We are being critical...
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:01
this conversation on here is no different than an actual debate
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:03
English 30-1 - critical thinking is taught
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:04
computers just give a reason to lack trying. we're being lazy...we're not extending our mind to its full potential
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:05
face to face
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:11
Teacher librarians have been teaching about ethically using information for a long time. Maybe we can learn from them.
Debbie Petkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:15
kids still need to recognize fact versus opinion
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:19
HOW IS USING A COMPUTER LAZY?
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:06:24
W
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:25
But how many teacher-librarians are out there?
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:06:25
e nee
Mandie (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:26
we're doing the same and more using a compouter than we were without
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:06:26
d a
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:06:26
Debbie Petkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:28
kids will need to be critical thinkers
LZ (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:06:30
does anyone else feel that interacting in this way is limiting conversation?
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:36
Not enough.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:36
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WRITING AND TYPING
Debbie Petkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:49
critical thinking, problem solving
Mandie (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:50
note graphing calculators and I AGREE WITH AARON
Rudager (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:52
different skill sets
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:52
This is out our students interact...
Heather (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:55
We need to all (universal) have to come up with a definition of what's good which spans cultures, politics, religions.
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:58
how much thought is going into the reponses?
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:58
practise makes perfect...
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:06:59
Hypothetical sittuation- handwriting an essay- having to pick up an actual dictionary and then exploring other words you wouldn't have known otherwise
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:00
it's not necessarily using the computer that makes it lazy it is the time wasted on the computer
Pat (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:00
are we willing to take risks??
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:04
Writing requires thinking. Typing is the mode of presenting.
Jen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:06
threads from others gets our talking
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:07:18
We need a balance. It's important that we're not on computers all day???
Debbie Petkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:25
I believe that the laptop will be part of a supply list
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:34
if we didn't take risks we'd still be living with candles for light and sticks and hoops for fun
Jen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:35
does this online contact limit real connections - will we have a communication face to face
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:37
The hard part will be helping to develop online, critical literacy so kids wont be tempted to cut and paste or befuddle their teachers with techo-glitter rather than meaningful learning.
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:39
A laptop is needed in university - no?
glenora (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:40
teaching students patience, perseverance, reliability, discretion when asking questions online and finding answers to questions
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:41
i agree with the balancing comment
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:44
writting helps us get a feel for what we're writting down, it helps us remember...typing is more of just a way to get it done faster
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:47
What is wrong with a stick or hoop for fun?
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:50
does the presentation not patter to possible employers in the future?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:07:52
lol
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:08:06
Glenora- These are home skills more so than school, my opinion.
Lisa Nachtigal (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:08:07
we need more teaching in regards to copy and pasting.... plaigarism issues
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:08:20
but laptops and computers have not always been required to live... and to learn
Rudager (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:08:26
same thing as a video game for fun... what's wrong with that?
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:08:26
exactl lisa..
glenora (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:08:40
table conversation remains very valuable
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:08:45
fun is not always learning..
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:08:57
plaigarism would be used by again, students that really dont care
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:03
Any type of converstation is valuble
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:04
@ lisa, what's wrong with disconnecting the computers being used from the internet?
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:07
plaigarism issues - you can copy and paste from a website for a paper instead of developing the thoughts in your own mind, its become to easy not to think and develop ideas
Debbie (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:07
How can we keep up...and stay healthy?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:14
cuts off outside sources of information
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:09:27
Remember "Big Brother is out there", we could be "being manipulated" by lobby groups and marketing gurus
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:29
good debate M.E
David harvey (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:09:32
The difference between typing and writing for me is that I can't write.
Heather (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:40
Teach kids the difference between what's good and isn't good.
Lisa Nachtigal (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:42
Kids argue "they can't function" if they're cut off
Karen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:43
The conversation is bits and bites...out of my comfort zone but okay nevertheless.
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:49
Morleygambit - great comment!
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:09:58
Morleygambit - Hasn't TV and newspapers been doing that for years?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:10:04
someone tell me, what is the concern for plaigarism?
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:10:07
it has become that we rely on technology even for our excersize.... ( wii fit)
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:10:13
Thanks Mark!
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:10:35
How many actually have a wii fit honestly?
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:10:51
Yes but are students aware of this?? Really?
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:10:53
Hey, when I copied out of the Brittanica I cut and pasted too... Whether it is online or not... we have to guide and support ... we haven't lost our role.
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:11:03
3 Wii fit at this table
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:11:21
what's the difference between copying and pasting or copying right out of a book?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:11:25
plaigarism is there
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:11:32
on both sides
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:11:41
its always going to be there
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:11:41
Students at this table are independant- no money for wii fit
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:11:44
They won't be aware of it unless we teach them - just like we were taught
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:11:54
so gym class is exceptable if that is a want
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:12:10
it is the fact of ease ... it is simple to copy and past .. rather then to hand copy out of a book
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:12:20
So we agree that plaigarism isn't exclusive to computers. I see no problem
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:12:30
you shouldnt be copying anyway what happened to thinking?
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:12:50
Hand copying is 2 down in the rule of 3 for developing info in long term memory
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:12:53
and what stops you from writing on a computer?
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:12:57
To copy one article is plagiarism to copy many is research??
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:13:04
technology has made it to easy to copy other peoples thoughts
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:13:21
take away the books when you're writing and you take away the sources of plaigarism. Take away the internet from a computer and you take away the source of plaigarism.
Mandie (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:13:30
its not just technology where you can ccopy form
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:13:32
Hey Plagiarism was good enough for Klien....
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:13:39
YOU CAN COPY FROM BOOKS TOO
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:13:54
BOOKS AREN'T THE INTERNET
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:14:06
it is accessability
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:14:10
technology has also made it easier to reference...
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:14:14
Books are others thoughts as well
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:14:18
A teacher is not a transfer device a teacher is a human event??
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:14:19
exactly
Debbie (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:14:26
No matter where we are headed...we need to know how to make reasoned judgements that will get us closer to the ultimate goal - and we need to be clear on what that goal is.
Lisa Nachtigal (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:14:52
agreed! Debbie
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:15:03
Any goal for current students is almost garenteed to have technology
andrew (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:15:27
There is a teacher version of Youtube called TeacherTube. Is there a teacher version of Facebook?
Debbie (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:15:34
technology is the tool...not the goal
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:15:38
the ultimate goal for students is to be successful in society. In order to do that, you will need the skills of both technology and everything else
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:15:53
it's not a one or the other situation
Kowsar Warsame (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:15:58
techonology is secondary to life-skills though
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:01
which is what you all keep trying to make this out to be
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:16:14
Get up, read newspaper on line, go to school cyberspace, go home facebook or MSN
Gordon (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:18
Do we still need the traditional classrooms?
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:19
You know my biggest problem in class right now (my wireless 1-1 class) Twilight. A book. A distraction
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:21
technology literacy is now a life skill
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:23
we dont need technology, we've gone with out it before..sure it makes life w whole lot easier...but we would do fine with out it
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:29
Any tool can be a distraction
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:35
technology is innevitable
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:40
THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY IS NOT A LIFE SKILL O.O
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:54
well now it is seen as one
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:16:54
why isnt it
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:16:59
Are there moral and legal issues for teachers using Facebook?
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:16:59
we can do fine without fire too... but I don't want to get rid of it...
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:17:00
Computers are on the exact same level as a pen or paper
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:17:07
a means to convey information
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:17:12
in our society it has become a life skill
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:17:15
therexactly
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:17:55
If the majority of information is on the internet, how is using technology to access it not a life skill?
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:18:06
aaron - agree - the computer is the paper and pencil
Debbie (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:18:07
a skill is a way to achieve something - not an end goal
jenise (cn) • 2009-03-09 12:18:17
a laptop should be a school supply
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:18:20
HAHA
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:18:24
I agree
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:18:31
as expensive as it may be :P
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:18:50
a computer is expensive
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:18:56
in the log run it is too expensive not to be a school supply
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:18:56
the computer is a lazy way of putting a pen to paper
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:18:59
it is the fact that ... not many people have the money or the resources to afford a laptop
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:00
Prices are coming down...
morleygambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:19:04
We should lobby the provincial government so that a laptop is a tax deductible educational benefit
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:19:10
y not take all the money from textbooks and such, buy computers, theyre cgheaper in bulk
Jen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:15
Computers require sophisticated thinking skills
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:26
Technology has made the world lazy....period
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:28
Dana, how is a computer lazy?
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:30
computers rquire .. a click of a button
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:31
Linux rather then windows makes it cheaper too - Google Aps
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:34
you still haven't told me
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:43
the pencil is a lazy way of putting chalk to slateboard
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:44
a computer is more than a word processing tool now - it is a connection to a world of information
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:53
aaron- writing vs. typing... ease?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:53
thank you mark :)
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:19:59
it sounds like the students are on the same page as us
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:04
less thinking comes from using a computer, it doesnt take a genious to type
bgaw (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:05
computers change your spelling therefore you do not spell things correctly the compter does it for you. thats lazy.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:06
writing vs typing = fingers vs wrist
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:07
Textbooks are a part of the cirriculum
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:12
still minor use of muscles
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:16
I see no differenc
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:19
more thinking comes out of using a pen and paper
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:20
to learn how to use technology you have to have a basic knowledge which you learn long before you rely on a computer
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:26
dana tell me how
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:31
Textbooks are not part of the curriculum.
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:31
as soon as a textbook is published it is out of date
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:35
you still use your mind to use words
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:39
There are websites based of Curric and developed by Alta Ed too
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:40
i know its a connection to people, but instead of writing a letter to my friend in Vancouver, i would just email him, or send him a message on facebook
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:42
You just spelled the words correctly to send the previous message
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:43
Curriculum does not equal textbook
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:44
They are a resource
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:52
when you write you use your mind to move yuor wrist. When you type you need to move all your fingers
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:20:55
aaron - you are able to simply type in a couple of words and view a whole slew of info, what happened to searching a library and expanding your thinking skills by processing and searching for pertanient info?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:21:00
in a sense typing uses more brain powe
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:21:15
who says you still can't?
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:21:16
With access to computers, the textbook is not necessarily the best resource
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:21:16
how?
Karen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:21:16
that's a big statement, Dana...we're not sure we agree and we are paper/pencil writers
Jen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:21:19
Using technology doesn't mean that print resources are obsolete
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:21:29
I'm saying they're the same. You're saying writing is sooo much better
Jessica (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:21:31
its useful for taking notes in lectures
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:21:32
libraries are a time consuming waste of space, power, time and trees
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:21:33
How is the computer a lazy way of putting pen to paper??
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:21:57
we obviously kno that its easier and more effiecent to use a computer, but we werent taught to resort to a computer its only been over the last couple yrs that we have started using computers but as i rememeber we did it all on paper...and i have to say that was the time..when i understood more about the things going on as to searching o the computer
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:02
A library is timeless...
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:08
Is "txt speech" still considered language?
Jessica (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:09
do we just get rid of libraries then?
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:15
computers are lazy, you can go experience more of life without them
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:15
Technology can support diffrerentiation allowing kids to learn at a pace and in a way that suits their learning needs...
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:27
you're still not disproving my point...
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:28
no we create virtual libraries
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:39
why is writing so much better than typing?
Jen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:45
Libraries are also forced to adapt to new ways of accessing information
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:51
kris, why is libraries un-usfull
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:52
Writing is an enevitable part of life too
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:55
why is reading off paper so much better than reading off a computer screen
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:22:56
especially when you can type as fast as youthink
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:05
l
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:09
writting u learn more, u can remember the things youve been writting as compared to just looking at on a screen
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:14
how
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:25
that extra thinking as you spend time writing helps you develop the ideas in your head
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:26
You may have to write at somepoint in your life... Do you want chicken scratch?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:26
you type something, you see it infront of you
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:28
Dana- How?
Dara Green (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:31
re: writing vs computer..... how about both... in good learning environments students should have choice
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:34
let's stop thinking in extremes - let's find the best of everything and quit thinking it is one or the other (old school vs. technology)
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:35
you write something, you see it infront of you
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:23:45
Perhaps it is the activities that we are doing on the computer that are the same as paper and pencil...we should be using the computers in different ways...this enriches the learning
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:47
typing is still kenetic
bgaw (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:57
you see it in front of you for that moment chances are your not going to remember it later
jenise (cn) • 2009-03-09 12:23:58
would you go back to black and white tv with three channels? Our libraries are fast becoming obselete, but print and knowledge is not.
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:23:59
u can disagree with me all you want, but computers distract or inhibility to learn.
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:24:03
the fact isn't that hand writing is better then typing but it is that when you hand write you are forced to use your own knowledge in the sense of spelling, grammer .. etc
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:24:05
typing is learned just as writing is, agree to disagree guys?
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:24:08
our*
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:24:14
i like the black and white tvs with 3 channels
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:24:29
Libraries as a learning commons where you use technology to access information as a community of learners
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:24:31
Dana, you haven't backed yourself up at all. You just keep restating the same useless point
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:24:47
there really is no difference... but it is the stimulation of the students
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:25:02
Aaron - while I agree she didn't prove her point, there's no need to flame
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:25:09
let it go aaron dana and i will not agree with you
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:25:11
Dana has support if not from her from others
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:25:47
wait, what are we arguing about
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:25:47
I just find it funny that one of the things we learn in school is to embrace other points of view. Clearly she cannot.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:26:04
but regardless
Kowsar Warsame (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:26:06
back to the original topic please
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:26:14
when you are working together on a project, isn't it just as good to work over MSN....no worrying about time spent getting somewhere, whose place you are going to meet at, do you have all the materials you need...
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:27:00
if you cannot read, can you surf the net
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:27:02
How many years have people been debating the best way to learn? Whole language any one?
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:27:08
see this knitter is distracting from the convo
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:27:30
and how is this discussion in a chatroom different from face to face
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:27:36
This kind of conversation happens during online conferences all the time
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:27:50
i can back it up but its more my point of view...u depend on ur computer, i prefer to learn and actually do the work
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:27:58
This current school has trouble understanding.
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:28:01
So are SMART boards helping kids get a more differentiated experince or are they leading to a class full of kids looking at one screen? How do we ensure that, no matter what tech we use, we use it intentionally and purposefully.. not just as a gizmeo?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:28:26
and I want you to tell me how using a computer is different from reading or writing anywhere else. Simple question
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:28:31
smart boards are being used like a chalkboard
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:28:32
J
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:28:33
Dana- and you've hit the nail on the head - it's a point of view... people learn in differnt ways
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:28:39
ust trying to change the topic!
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:28:43
is that not dependent on the way we use it and teach it? We need to let go of controlling the learning environment
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:28:44
it takes different strokes to move the world
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:28:47
they have the potential to be interactive and intuitive
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:28:58
I think it is time to take the paradigm shift...you are now limiting your own learning and I believe that this serves as an injustice to your students.
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:29:03
We use multiple tools to reach multiple students
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:29:06
smart boards are a great resource ... but the teachers need to learn how to use it properly so as to teach properly
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:29:16
computers are easier, u hardly have to try. its a click of a mouse...to find ur answer..where as on paper..u find it urself...u actaully try...get the point now...Aaron?
Jen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:29:26
It is up to the user of the SMARTBOARD to create engaging and meaningful content
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:29:40
J. Percy - why? Can't we use it like an over head? Does that negate the value of the education?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:29:48
not really. You flick through a book to find information, you scroll throught webpages to find information. Same difference
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:29:52
reading comprehension, critical thinking and problem solving is more important than ever
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:30:02
it's not like by clicking search on google the answer will be there
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:30:07
Wow someones getting a little heated
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:30:16
*change the topic
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:30:20
it requires the same amount of effort to find something on the internet than in a book.
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:30:23
if you can find the answer easily by the use of a click of a mouse, then perhaps you should not be asking these types of questions...something to think about?
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:30:34
see what everyone else thinks, direct ur question to everyone else..check out there point of views..?
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:30:55
maybe you should look at what questions you are asking, are they indepth?
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:31:24
?
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:31:47
My point is that you can make simple hunt and find questions and have the kids do them on paper, online or on the SMASRT board. We as professionals have to think about how the tech (pen and pencil are tech too...) will enhance critical literacy and inquiry... not reinforce regurgitation.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:32:02
thank you
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:32:50
The question is what limitations we should put on what tools....
Karen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:33:08
i am in awe of the doors that are opened for our most vulnerable students through technology
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:33:39
sheranjay-ur point awesome, its one of many views
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:33:41
Karen - and the students who have walked through them, who before would have remaind silent
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:33:44
Shane: I do think we should try and make sure these limitations are solid and do not negate the best efforts of the teachers. (*Ex: Youtube :)*)
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:33:49
the computer is a tool. How we use it is up to us
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:33:56
doors do open ... but the minds of students are shut down ... they rely on technology rather then their own minds
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:34:04
Is it about limiting tools or about opening up vistas while teaching online courtesy and inquiry.
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:34:11
JPP: And that doesn't happen with a textbook?
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:34:15
I use You tube in my class all the time...
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:34:23
With what they are talking about on VC, what do people think about students researching information during the teacher talking?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:34:31
People don't rely on Bio 30 textbooks to get them through their class? Or Literature books? Sparknotes, anyone?
jenise (cn) • 2009-03-09 12:34:32
listen to the sudents, they can do more than one thing at a time- using computers as an extension to learning
Jen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:34:38
youtube is wonderful in the classroom
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:34:39
a computer just makes it more accessible
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:34:45
New Topic?
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:34:48
Does anyone find it difficult to follow this conversation and the VC?
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:34:49
I disagree. USing technology is problem solving. Using all the tools in our toolkit makes sense.
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:34:56
I agree.
Jen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:35:06
no Tim I can follow both
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:35:10
Yes, Tim, but we are not digital natives!
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:35:16
Good point.
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:35:43
I am struggling with following two conversations.
Karen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:35:53
what about equity and access...i'm thinking of the student from Q.E.
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:36:05
OK new topic... how do we assess the new types of learning and literacies when we are so dependent on pen and paper assessments?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:36:19
we assess them digitally.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:36:26
there's no need to change that really...
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:36:29
Karen - some people have access to University libraries, while others do not... is that any different?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:36:31
how so?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:36:37
*@Aaron
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:36:38
Maybe that is tied to a larger question...what do we want assessments to assess?
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:36:49
Would you accept a transcript of an online conversation as evidence of learning?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:36:49
no, i think this topic is fine as is.
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:36:56
Absolutely
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:37:07
because it's true that in a pen and paper assignment, written in-class on the spot you know it's 100% the student's own work
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:37:24
that's debatable.
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:37:34
i think u answered ur own question there..
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:37:45
who did?
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:37:49
Perhaps that is where the 'conversation' part of Ann Davies work comes in
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:38:07
Ohkay... What do you think students need to lean to be able to succeed and prosper in an unpredictable future?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:38:24
how to utilise technology properly.
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:38:25
Is anyone surfing the internet while we have this discussion? If so, I guess our kids can do it too...
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:38:29
The ablity to learn and adapt
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:38:37
not just to tech - but to life
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:38:38
we are already winning with the whole 'Wikipedia is not God' topic.
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:38:47
we should be teaching students not to use technology as a crutch.
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:38:59
the ability to critically assess information
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:39:02
ask other schools please
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:39:07
- its hard enough to keep up with both discussions
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:39:18
i agree wtih JPP: the other schools would like more discussion.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:39:22
technology should be taught as a tool used to convey information, just like a pen or paper
jenise (cn) • 2009-03-09 12:39:35
we said the same thing about the typewriter (crutch)
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:39:44
technology is not a crutch...would you have considered the telephone a crutch in 1920?
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:39:58
Having some technical difficulties i see
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:40:07
Or the wagon when the wheel was "invented"?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:40:09
would you have considered the telegraph a crutch in 1940?
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:40:09
hence the issue
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:40:16
consider a computer like a textbook, pen, and paper in one
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:40:28
a tool to find information, and record it
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:40:38
it's all a matter of perspective.
bgaw (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:40:43
can we move on?
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:40:51
i think we need to just find a balance between the both
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:40:51
please
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:40:53
what is the topic ?
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:41:02
what about creation in addition to finding and recording
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:41:04
unpredictable futures?
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:41:06
And perspective is shifting. But it doesn't make it wrong
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:41:17
They're jumping around so much, it's ridiculous.
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:41:24
If you'd like a new topic, just ask a new question...
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:41:25
Going beyond the textbook to creating their own textbook.
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:41:50
This is what our students do when they are online! They have multiple converstations going on simultaneously.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:42:05
this is what students do in class too :P
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:42:10
must we hear everything from JPP?
Gordon (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:42:17
textbooks are expensive so we keep them and use them even when they are outdated.
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:42:19
there is something called equality
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:42:21
heck yes!!!
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:42:31
How are they spreading this?
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:42:33
Critical thinking vc critics
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:42:34
who is B.S
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:42:35
you can use an outdated computer also
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:42:38
Do we just jump in and answer a question?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:42:45
I had a windows 98 until just 2 years ago
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:42:46
OK new question... What can teachers offer that home schoolers or distance learning can't? How are we going to stay relevant and continue to guide rather that become obsolete?
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:42:48
If the textbook is outdated, isn't the information in it inaccurate?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:42:57
as much as i like hearing opinions from JPP, i think there should be something where other schools should be able to chip in.
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:43:02
paper and pencil have been timeless
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:43:05
True
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:43:06
that is called a "discussion"
Gordon (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:43:17
Is pluto still considered a planet?
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:43:21
That's a great question Sheranajay....
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:43:22
we are debating, its our turn
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:43:23
paper and pens..will always be there and cost way less then a computer...
Amir B. (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:43:29
yeah
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:43:31
I don't have an answer though... yet....
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:43:45
so we can just jump in?
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:43:57
I habe no idea
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:43:59
*have
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:44:06
Is learning moving out of the classroom, and becoming a more communal event?
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:44:07
everybody gets a turn
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:44:13
And if so is that wrong?
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:44:14
dana consider this for a moment... a computer can last up to 10 years. 10 years worth of pens and paper wuold cost about the same would it not?
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:44:19
pink school - 1 JPP - 2
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:44:20
and such
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:44:20
JPP: I would like to see actual evidence of that, not just words.
jenise (cn) • 2009-03-09 12:44:40
students are asking for more engaging teaching (Lecture is good, but!!)
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:44:45
a 10 year old computer doesnt work well.. i have one it's horrible. the internet wont even run
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:44:54
so constant upgrading is important then?
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:44:57
paper will still be usefull 10 years later
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:45:03
not if it's been used.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:45:07
yet you can still open a notepad, write soemthing, and print it right?
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:45:08
Yeah, we still need money in 10 years
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:45:10
i don't know about you, but i can't write on my old paper.
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:45:11
yay for paper money
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:45:14
Then why are there so many editions of textbooks?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:45:15
it'll rip.
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:45:17
u pay for the computer, the programs, the internet..and watever else u need...where as u can reuse paper...buy cheap pens
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:45:23
who are u b.S
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:45:25
Dana, does it have to be either-or? Can we not keep both face to face, paper and pen AND computers?
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:45:37
u can use ur money on other things, maybe more important things
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:45:37
agreed betty-lou :)
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:45:38
JPP!!!
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:45:43
Jeebus.
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:45:50
What happened to "everyone gets their turn" ?
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:45:54
thanks lyndon
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:45:54
of course u can use both...
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:45:57
I use both in my 1-1 class, depending on the situation.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:46:02
THANK YOU
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:46:08
you CAN use both... the truth comes out
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:46:10
i'm pretty sure they direct the questions to a specific school
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:46:18
The right tool for the right jb
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:46:20
I haven't heard any direction.
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:46:23
*job
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:46:34
I agree, too, Betty-Lou - there is a place for both paper and technology!
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:46:35
Shane, I like your point.
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:46:38
there we go!
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:46:44
Utilizing both is great.
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:46:47
at first, they directed all questions at ross shep, it was our turn
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:46:49
JPP: way 2 go :)
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:47:01
ha. ha.
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:47:03
what school are u b.S
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:47:11
braemar.
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:47:27
um ok.. back to the discussion
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:47:40
When you are teaching in front of the room, you can (hopefully) involve students in discussion
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:47:42
no your not braemanr bs
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:47:47
B.S- who may it be, we're from braemar..?
jenise (cn) • 2009-03-09 12:48:28
technology has the power to engage students in conversations about their learning even in a live lecture format (case in point, today!)
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:48:45
The sage on the stage model is no longer affective - colaberative learning is the most engaging (IMHO)
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:48:53
funny you say that Shane.
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:48:59
we're doing the same thing right here.
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:49:00
but that is at the choice of the students involved
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:49:05
please dont use like as a filler ford, um or ahh is much much better
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:49:10
BRAVO to the student who mentioned the idea of increasing interactive use of computers -
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:49:13
word**
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:49:15
Yes, a lecturer is not the way that learning is interactive...
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:49:38
Smartboards are overused! And videos are mostly on Youtube, which is restricted!
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:49:50
Ok, how, then do we move to interactive teaching using both the classroom and technology...is that not why we are here?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:50:04
i suggest TED.
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:50:10
@Sgodlien
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:50:11
If we focused on choosing the right tool for the right purpose - we wouldn't have the paper pencil vs. computer debate. Not everything is appropriate for every activity.
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:50:18
You can download useful videos from youtube and integrate it into your lesson.
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:50:27
TED?
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:50:38
SGodlien - how are Smart boards over used? I'm not being snotty - just curious in your opinion.
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:50:39
Youtube is restricted!
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:50:41
I would love to have the answers, but i wonder if there is an "answer"
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:50:41
don't you know of it?
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:50:44
How are SMART Boards overused?
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:50:59
Sitting and looking at powerpoints all class is not appealing to a student
Rick (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:51:00
SMART Board overused? Would you say that the overhead is overused? or a white board could be overused?
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:51:01
Ted Talks http://ted.com/
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:51:07
Thank you Arlene :)
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:51:22
Why do you have to use a SMART board just for ppts?
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:51:29
Smart boards shouldn't be a replacement for an overhead projector or a whiteboard...so much more can be done!
Andrew WIlkes (CN) • 2009-03-09 12:51:29
powerpoinmts are more appealing than a whiteboard
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:51:36
Whiteboard, drawing diagrams, seeing things how they work using the mind power as it comes instead of premeditated teachings all the time
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:51:38
smart boards are new technology ... and it is embracing that technology that is making it seen over used
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:51:52
that makes sense.
Rick (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:51:57
STUDENTS: Give us a specifc example of a lesson that you were totally engaged in
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:52:02
Again, the Smart board is a tool. It is how you use it that makes good teaching
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:52:16
Mark - if using a smartboard like an overhead is a good way to get technophbic teachers started, what's wrong with it?
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:52:24
Yes, but it all depends on the teacher
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:52:26
The Oedipus Rex production at M.E. @Rick
jenise (cn) • 2009-03-09 12:52:34
we need to use social networking technology for collaborative learning in schools, not oulaw it.
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:52:36
Over time the technology can be better explioted
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:52:40
Oedipus Rex :)
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:52:45
Some may see it as an easier way to do the work in a more efficient time for themselves
Anton (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:52:55
How would you recommend that Smart Boards be used to best engauge students.
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:53:09
I agree - it's a good way to get someone comfortable with the technology - it's just shouldn't limit the use of it
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:53:22
smartboard programs can be put on laptops, this would make it more engaging
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:53:29
Well, honestly, i dont see how what it does is any different from an "old school" style of teaching
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:53:44
they cant kris, can u touch screen your laptop?no
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:53:46
You can watch a movie, or do a lab
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:53:49
there just needs to be a balance
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:53:52
True - but I find many people (some of them Admin) expect more and scare technophobs - so they don't use it at all...
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:53:53
Some schools put the notebook software on all of their computers for students to use.
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:53:56
I think you need to involve students by getting them to explore the possibilities, ask them to discover ways we can use it.
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:53:57
yea the only difference is that its easier
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:54:01
technophobes/
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:54:04
*?
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:54:06
So can anyone suggest online applications like web 2.0 sites that can allow students to collaborate and complete meaningful assignments?
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:54:07
touch screen? For what? To write something, that can be done on a whiteboard?
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:54:11
there are technophobes?
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:54:15
The teacher needs to think interactively in their lesson design - using an interactive whiteboard doesn't necessarily make your teaching interactive!
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:54:27
You can use a mouse to interact with it
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:54:38
interactive- Can it be interactive with the students as well...
Arlene (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:54:42
Wikis and blogs are web 2.0 tools can be used for collaboration.
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:54:52
check out Kim Peacock's suggestions from the U of A - she has identified the best tools for teachers on Web 2.0
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:54:56
Again, multiple tools to do the same job - big the right one for you.
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:55:25
I love Web 2.0
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:55:36
ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS FTW.
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:55:36
You can give students interactive SMART software that engage tehm with inquiry and critical thinking skills
B.S (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:55:40
good night :)
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:55:41
A whiteboard can bring more exploration of the mind of the teacher, and students seeing that would be benificial. Smartboards seem like 100% strict lesson plan, very boring
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:56:03
thankyou sgodlien!
Karen (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:56:10
shane...can i put a vulcan mind lock on your brain and absorb all of your tech saviness!
Gordon (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:56:24
Here is Kim's page http://www.protopage.com/web2point0forteachers
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:56:29
SGodlien - you need to come watch me use my "Smart Board" - it's not like that at all
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:56:31
But it all depends on the teacher and how it is used. I know that I am not fully knowledged on how smartboard works
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:56:50
Any time you'd like Karen.
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:56:57
yes, and i hope your students enjoy it, but from my experience its all powerpoints.
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:57:01
If you give an opened ended question and let the students use the tools of the SMART program...the possibilities become endless
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:57:09
shane- ur different with ur smartboard...but not everyone is like u
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:57:13
and you waste lesson time learning how smartboard works
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:57:18
Shane, maybe somehow teachers need to have time to 'play' with technology, just like our students
sheranjay (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:57:20
I can see where teacdhers can become slaves to their powerpoints... they lose some of their "teaching moments" cuz they have all their slides pre planned.
Anton (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:57:24
How would students best use the Smartboard technology on their laptops
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:57:32
YES! Class time fixing a technical issue... dependancy issues?
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:57:41
Its all dependent on the teacher. A paint brush in my hand is useless - but in Vango's....
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:57:42
not everyone can get laptops
Rick (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:57:45
Dont think of a SMART Board as powerpoint, but a tool to document learning
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:57:51
we need to hav more stimulation, something that grabs our attention or its just the same as doing it all on a chalkboard or paper
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:58:05
Go guys!
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 12:58:08
Breamar or w.e
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:58:14
which comes with technology
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:58:17
But chalk and paper can be stimulating as well....
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:58:23
So we need to teach in bits and bytes?
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:58:29
Yes, powerpoint is quite strict to the lesson plan, but Smart boards are much more open ended.
Anton (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:58:40
A Smartboard is no better than a Power point if it is not interactive. Is that not so?
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:58:46
Some overhead lessons are very strict too
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:58:48
just one the smart board comment... smart boards are more hands on for us as the students
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:58:51
maybe but everyday we should do soemthing new...not just use one thing
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:59:27
Of course - it goes back to the way the teacher plans from the outset - they must plan for interaction...
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 12:59:31
'Try one thing a day that scares you?"
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 12:59:32
Devils advocate - overheads and the old felt boards can be hands on and interactive...
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:00:25
we need technology - but we can not get rid of our past ... of what we know
Tim Paetkau (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:00:36
girl at Queen E. Stop chewing gum.
joe (ab) • 2009-03-09 13:00:37
a slate and chalk can be interactive too ... should we go back to that?
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 13:00:44
Haha
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:00:52
Anything can be interactive - or anything can be teacher-directed...these are only tools.
Anton (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:00:55
Quite perceptive Shane
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 13:01:00
I think it is important for us as educators to keep professional development ongoing; hence, it is crucial to keep learning new technologies such as SMART. You invest the time (yes), but the building of capacity makes you a better educator and your students become engaged adn challenged
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:01:06
hows that challanging?
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:01:12
Mark - we use whatever it takes to engage and educate....
Mark (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:01:34
I agree.
joe (ab) • 2009-03-09 13:01:55
Why is learning to use the technology the sole responsiblity of the teacher?
betty-lou (ab) • 2009-03-09 13:02:17
Remember, we are teaching digital kids...the world they inhabit is different from ours. We need to use their own tools to reach and engage them
Shane (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:02:20
Joe - it's not... but we feel it is, cause that's how we learned....
joe (ab) • 2009-03-09 13:02:22
Can't the student's be the 'teachers'?
JPP (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:02:29
cya
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:02:35
it isn't the responsibility of the teacher but if they want to use technology they should use it properly
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 13:02:57
It is not...perhaps we as teachers should let go of the technology and give it to the students and then we learn together
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 13:02:57
Well, that was ridiculous.
SGodlien (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:03:02
Teachers use the smartboard beacuse it is easier, would they go back to challenging themselves? Maybe not
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 13:03:17
I am very dissapointed with David.
morley gambit (CN) • 2009-03-09 13:03:18
Prometheus boards might be better than Smartboards
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 13:03:21
In the end.
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:03:23
could be more challenging if they don't know how to use one
Samantha (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:03:48
personally i believe that knitter should have been shut down so that we could focus on the discussion. its hard enough to hear the questions let alone type and think and listen at the same time
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 13:04:07
THen don't type if you can't hear.
Dana (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:04:13
yea well its frustrating argueing with ppl that dont understand our opinions
J. Percy Page (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:04:25
Thank you all for hearing our opinions today. We are now signing out. Have a great day!
Aaron (AB) • 2009-03-09 13:04:34
it's frustrating arguing with people that don't know what they're talking abuot
Lyndon (CA) • 2009-03-09 13:04:49
Thanks...
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 13:05:10
It is not that we dont agree with your opinions...we are just trying to challenge one another professionally...isn't that what we do in the classroom?
Kris (ab) • 2009-03-09 13:05:56
Enjoy your lunch everyone
