The title of this presentation was Telling the New Story

BIll (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:24:37
Hello!

David Warlick (NC) • 2008-06-24 09:24:43
I look forward to reading your conversation

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 09:25:01
Good morning!

BIll (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:25:04
Nice of you to join us Kwisten!

Jessica Carter (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:25:51
Hi Everyone!

Carlene Beegle (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:26:10
Good Morning

BIll (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:30:11

Are you showing off, Bill?

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:30:49
Translate? or is that another way to say "Kwisten?"

BIll (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:31:35
Pink... Whole New Mind - Story

Jessica Carter (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:36:40
Oh yes, definitely a connection to Pink

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:36:41
Bill, Дали говориш македонски

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:41:24
how many of these devices do you own Mr. Warlick?

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:41:47
I don't think I'd want to be that connected, but then again who knows...

Part of me wants to be a Luddite when I grow up. I think that we can certainly be too connected. I recent wrote a blog entry about how to keep your personal learning network from running amok. A big part of it was how you need to just go out and take a walk every once in a while.

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:43:41
he's got an iphone...

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 09:43:48
David Thornburg writes a lot about the future of education using the research of futurists.

Jessica Carter (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:46:01
I am not sure I would wantto be that connected either, but as he said, unpredictable furture...

That's the point -- unpredictable future. One of the most interesting trends is how our appliances will likely be connected, you toaster talking to your refrigerate, talking to your car engine -- sounds rediculous, but some of the examples are pretty compelling. We spend a lot of time managing our appliances.

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:46:50
that means he's connected...

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 09:47:04
I jue

Jessica Carter (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:47:35
SOme teachers are very far from not using paper as much, we had 1 this year who used 22,000 copies this year...

There's a school in NYC that requires that all work be turned in digitally. That one rule dramatically changed the workings of the entire school, from management to the nature of the assignments given by teachers.

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:48:29
that's a lot, there are a lot that use a ton of paper, but the emphasis isn't on "the future" but being successful on SOL's, which isn't condusive to going paperless

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 09:48:44
I just heard about RFDs (radio frequency devices) that can be embedded under the skin. Holds credit card info, drivers licence info, SSN, etc. Smaller than a tylenol capsule, usually implanted around the collarbone.Crazy!

Yep, that is crazy. But imaging RFIDs embedded in the packaging of the produces you buy in the grocery story. You just wheel your cart through and a machine can immediately tell what you've bought.

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:48:53
I don't think the SOL reflect a learner who is ready for the 21st century

Nope! If it's like ours (EOCs), then it tells how prepared they are for the 1950s!

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:49:16
Welcome to the MATRIX! : )~

Oh My! I hope not. But read Snowcrash, by Neal Stephenson. The Metaverse may well be on the way.

Jessica Carter (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:49:57
poin

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 09:51:20
apparently there are RFDs also embedded in money - they've been in passports for a couple of years - that can be scanned to ID how much cash a person is carrying

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:51:46
it would come up blank when i go through the scanner

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:52:38
don't the SBO people have them in their id tags?

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:53:11
Jan wouldn know

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 09:53:13
sounds like the money scanning thing is used mostly in the gov to ID drug money etc

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:53:18
Yeah...WALKMANS!!!

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:53:31
as long as they tag the money and not the drugs

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:54:16
they can see all that on YouTube

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:54:43
that's true, and there are a lot that enjoy looking up that stuff

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 09:54:47
Sounds A LOT like Dr. David Thornburg

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:55:32
at the SBO they spent the day talking on netmeeting to people 12 feet away.. ;)

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:56:37
that's good if you don't want to actually talk with people. There's value in both, but I don't think you can replace face to face if you can help it.

I agree! I think that humans will always demand face2face. As I may have said during the presentation, they mostly use their connectedness to enhance their face to face relationships.

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:56:45
my son maxed out his 200 messages 1/2 through June

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:56:54
17 years old

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 09:56:57
noticed kids during the SOL math tests using their calculators with thumbs only, no pointers, like we were taught

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:57:20
time to go unlimited

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:57:45
that's what he says, but on HIS dime, not mine

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:58:02
here here

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:58:17
Absolutely time...my 3 year old can already get around on a website like a pro

I recently heard a story of a community in Hawaii, exclusively inhabited by endiginous people. Traditionally, a very rough area. A new principal turned the high school into an enterprise, kids trained in digital arts, and they hire themselves now for all kinds of info-artisan jobs. What's been interesting is that the younger kids are coming into their school with the skills already -- learned from their older brother or sister.

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:58:18
put'em to work!

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:58:47
teachers aren't ready for that! That's why they pay us the big bucks!

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:59:04
most are still scared that they have email

I'M LOSING PATIENCE! NO EXCUSES!

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:59:10
never mind chat

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:59:10
I'm so excited Wilderness finally has FIBER!

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:59:11
I was just thinking that too

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:59:21
or even a laptop

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:59:30
or wireless projector!

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:59:34
I have some that won't use the laptops because they don't have a mouse

Ten bucks at Best Buy!

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 09:59:42
lol

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 09:59:52
we had that yesterday in our PD

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:00:21
5 years... all touch screen like the iPhone

Exactly!

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:00:28
luckily we brought USB mice

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:00:33
and lots of screen cleaner wipes

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:00:44
I think it is hard for teachers to feel like there kids know more then them

I think that if teachers accept that part of being a teacher is being a master learner, then it may become easier to respect the kids for what they know and learn from it, or at least depend on it.

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:00:46
Jess, I have a couple of those too :-D They can't be convinced otherwise either . . . trackpad? That's not a mouse.

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:01:18
Oh yeah Jess, that is HUGE...it's that and a control issue too...

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:01:20
i agree, Jess.. I see that as a big part of our job... to help them get over that

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:01:35
Definitely

Sometimes the best answer to a question in class is, "I don't know! How do you think we might find the answer?"

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:01:55
a laptop mouse is a good example of where the technology is heading

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:02:39
:) i misread your message than, and pictured a mouse that you use on your lap.. had funny image of it

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:02:49
This kid is great!

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:03:05
lol...

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:03:14
yeah, that was entertaining...

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:03:24
stay away from the optical ones.. stick with the roller balls ;)

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:03:52
Community! what a great idea!! :)

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:04:04
Yeah, we should do that...

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:04:04
hmm...why didn't we think of that?

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:04:22
next step is to make a community of students....

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:04:37
Maybe that should have been the first step...

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:04:40
Absolutley!

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:04:54
I found his "future school" story very interesting

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:05:45
i love facebook... never could get with MySpace, though

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:06:07
I'll have to request you as a fried, Bill.

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:06:13
yeah, never went to Facebook, but have myspace, good way to connect with old friends

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:06:17
friend, not fried

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:06:18
my daughter lives and breathes facebook...

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:06:31
she hates that i use it....

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:06:46
Just connected with some HS friends this week

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:06:46
yeah. wondered why you would request that i be fried

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:07:07
uittr

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:07:13
not tarred

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:07:16
My entire family is on MySpace....like Facebook better

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:07:36
my wife and i started using uittr on chat... drives the kids nuts that they dont know what it means

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:07:40
not tarred

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:08:20
Need to get on Facebook though

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:08:33
but SOL's won't let teachers teach like that

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:08:33
I have to admit, I'm trying to figure out what it means....

I feel the same way. If I were running a tech program for a school or district, I'd find someway to invite the students in to teach us about social networks.

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:08:41
The kids have to take a writing test

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:08:43
wombat?

Waste of Money, Brains, and Time

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:08:44
:) it means absolutely nothing..

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:08:51
;) thats the fun part

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:09:01
we just type it when they're looking

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:09:07
gotcha

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:09:18
that's good, I like that

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:09:23
there's research that says that IM actually helps writing skills

These kids certainly are writing more than we did -- at least using the lowercase letters.

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:09:55
ooh, I would like to see that

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:10:05
I can see that, you have to track a conversation, sequencing, plot, even rereading for comprehension of what the heck your friends are saying

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:10:10
Although, I have much to learn myself

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:10:24
one of my former students is on facebook

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:10:36
like he says, it's communicating... we tend to teach writing not communicating

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:10:37
metioned it's not blocked

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:10:48
in the county

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:11:05
can only type a few words at a time

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:11:37
I am surprised this is not blocked

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:11:47
Was it unblocked for him

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:12:06
i think it was a screen shot, wasn't it?

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:12:08
I don't think so, twitter is blocked, or parts of it anyways

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:12:10
dont think so

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:12:29
haven't checked it myself

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:12:34
myspace isn't blocked right now either

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:12:40
yeah.. parts of twitter are blocked... i have it on my netvibes page and it gets a feed from twitter so I can see messages and add them

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:12:46
really...cool....lol

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:12:57
or you tube

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:13:13
shock.. facebook isn't blocked

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:13:16
fliter down!!

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:13:17
cool

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:13:17
must be unblocked for PD's

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:13:24
true, good point

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:13:41
Guess I need to create a facebook account....

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:13:52
Freedom feels kind of weird...

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:14:11
makes you feel guilty doesn't it...

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:14:27
oops.. some is blocked... can't get to the applications

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:14:41
get with the 21st century than

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:14:42
;)

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:15:02
I need to as well Than

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:15:03
I know, I'm stuck in the Myspace era, that was so 2005

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:15:20
Like Facebook better

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:15:37
myspace... ew

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:15:38
what's the difference? do they overlap?

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:15:55
I have 1 friend that I know of on Facebook, most are on myspace

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:15:57
myspace - facebook.... beta - vhs

Have you looked at Ning! Create your own social network. Some teachers are creating social networks for their students.

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:16:22
8 track - Cassette tape?

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:17:54
there you go

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:18:36
ok... don't even like riding a virtual roller coaster

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:21:53
notice how games are becoming more and more realistic... tv is moving towards 'reality' tv... they'll merge and we realize that all of life is just a game.. ;)

You've seen nothing yet.

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:22:18
my head hurts now

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:22:34
I thought that was a very cool game example...

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:22:36
tha

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:22:46
t could be a year of science class

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:22:52
This one is a little scary, cool but scary

Definitely weird! But the learning potential!

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:23:11
It could be Than, but I can see some religious groups having issue with this one

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:23:17
this has to blow the teachers in the rooms minds!

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:23:18
think about it.. those gps toe-rings with the right software... how long before someone clicks on my image on a screen and i get dragged from table to another?

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:23:34
true, evilution

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:23:41

watch out for mailboxes!

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:24:25
Or one of those animals could eat you

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:24:26
it would be nice, though, to click on some people's image and click 'mute'.. ;)

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:24:41
names?...JK!!

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:25:03

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:25:32
weight loss would be easy...

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:25:43
yeah, very true, I think everyone opinion is valuable, even if you disagree with it, but sometimes you reach a point

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:25:45
i IM my kids when it's time for dinner.. easier than hollering upstairs.. ;)

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:26:10
we aren't there yet in my house

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:26:15
are you sure they don't push your mute button?

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:26:27
guess it's sad that we're all in our own rooms on chat in the first place, huh?

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:26:42
remember intercoms? We had one in the house I grew up in...

Angel (US) • 2008-06-24 10:26:43
Bill, isn't that a scene in the movie RV?

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:26:52
we should be in the living room gathered around the Wii

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:26:55
I can only imagine how it will be with my kids in 10 years

Bill (MK) • 2008-06-24 10:27:52
omg

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:28:10
I love it

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:28:14

Jess (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:30:21
We are going to stick to good ole' fashioned digital movie making

Than (VA) • 2008-06-24 10:30:23
