Attending the session "Harnessing the New Shape of Info."--David Warlick Notes by: Melanie Stewart What is web 2.0?

-Wikipedia is a great example of web 2.0. -The Web is becoming editalbe

Every home in South Korea has broadband Internet access because their government thouht it would be in the countries best interest to have the citizens connected. The US has not committed to that. That' one reason we are left behind.

As a district tech diredctor, set-up a wiki for the techs in case they run into a problem, the can hash it out and in essence create an "online mannual" for the problems they may run into. In essence, a wiki conveys that we all have knowledge or experiences that are essential centributions to any program, career, or interest. Suggestions - use wiki to create a dictionary for a grade. anytime they discover a new word or learn a new spelling word, have a student go to the wiki, add the word and definition alphabetically, and at the end of the year that class will have a "dictionary" of all the words they learned that particular year.

The advantage of a wiki over a general set of encyclopedias: An encyclopedia is static - a committee gets together and determins what's important about a topic. A wiki is active. It is maintained by people who are passionate about a topic and more information my be included. It can also be updated momentarily and can include links to help with research.

Alow students to research with wiki, but with 2 conditions: 1. Go research topic in wiki, then 2. Go find th evidence that what is in the wiki is true.

We must teach students to "uncover the truth behind information" to produce information literate thruth. This also teaches them to look at info provided by various sources and their take on a subject.
