Is anyone currently using gaming as a learning tool in their schools?

mary (US) • 2008-05-22 09:57:09
my SL avatar can't get off Orientation Island

I'm glad to hear that someone else had problems with that ;-)

Brian (TX) • 2008-05-22 09:58:57
You need someone to send you a teleport

Michael Peterson (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:05:44
I can't even get a teacher to teach web design! No gaming in Whitesboro.

I think that the kids are the real pressure. The question is, "how much attention are teachers (and leaders) paying to their students?

Lane (US) • 2008-05-22 10:08:40
On games becoming more complex - it is also like an addiction. The addict requires a higher threshhold to get the same level of satisfaction.

An interesting take. But you'd have to consider reading an addiction as well. Like cheating, we need more than one word for addiction.

I want to explore using Spore in our Biology classes if it ever gets released

Yes! I was supposed to use that demo as well, an edited down version of the speech and demo that Wright did a while back. It's a fascinating program in ways even larger than just the biology. I'm intrigued by the user generated content aspects.

mary (US) • 2008-05-22 10:12:46
my husband used to play Roller Coaster Tycoon

I was going to in preparation for this presentation, but my daughter lost it. Drat!

We have started letting our high school students bring their XBOX360s to school one Friday night a month and play games across the network

Cool! A school-based LAN party. I know that there is a faction of the American School Library Association, who is advocating this sort of thing as a service of the library. Not all librarians are buying in.

mary (US) • 2008-05-22 10:20:18
what a great idea!

mary (US) • 2008-05-22 10:23:04
pitma?

Debbie (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:23:36
Plus it gives students a positive connection with school and something they love to do!

mary (US) • 2008-05-22 10:24:04
Picmen?

Debbie (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:24:19
Is it pitman?

Pikmin! Here's the Wikipedia article.

Donna (US) • 2008-05-22 10:25:20
I'll bet if you took a look at attendance rates since implementing game night, Friday attendance is way up!

Debbie (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:29:49
I

Debbie (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:29:50
I a

Debbie (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:30:53
I don't recognize any of these games. I'm way out of touch on this.

Brian (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:35:56
The friday night idea was actually brought up by the students, who asked an asst principal, who came to me about it

Donna (US) • 2008-05-22 10:42:17
Brian, How long have you been doing the game night? On average how many kids attend?

Brian (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:44:06
We have been doing it all year, on average once a month or so - I don't know how many come on a regular basis but there is a core of about 10 students that run it

Donna (US) • 2008-05-22 10:45:00
Great idea! Do you have teachers involved or do parents chaperone?

Brian (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:45:27
The assistant principal is the "sponsor" - basically he attends and the kids beat him at all the games

mary (US) • 2008-05-22 10:46:22
where is the program hosted?

Donna (US) • 2008-05-22 10:46:47
Do you allow students to bring in any game or do you limit the games to a certain rating?

Brian (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:46:52
they use XBOX360s connected to our network

Brian (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:47:29
There is a parent permission slip about it, but I'm not quite sure what it says about the game ratings..I know they play Halo

Debbie (TX) • 2008-05-22 10:47:48
Wasn't there a movie with Michael Douglas about a realistic game like that?

mary (US) • 2008-05-22 10:59:08
i think so - there was also a tv show i saw the other night that had a reference to the freezing in grand central station

Brian (TX) • 2008-05-22 11:02:34
Whyville reminds me of Webkinz - since its for the younger users

Brian (TX) • 2008-05-22 11:02:59
We have a teacher experimenting with a class WebKinz as a learning center

mary (US) • 2008-05-22 11:26:06
excellent presentation - lots to think about. thanks!

Brian (TX) • 2008-05-22 11:26:29
agreed - very good, definitely gave me some ideas as well

robynr43 (TX) • 2008-05-22 12:10:58
I have just gotten involved in gaming in our district with a math game put out by Tabula Digita, I was concerned at first that gaming wasn't good, but the more the kids play the more I am sold on their participation.
