How is Information Changing?

It's Digital -- The predominant language of the world today is not English or Spanish. It is digital.

Multicasting -- Today, anyone can publish information to a global audience, just about anything they want, and for just about any reason.

Pax, Salam. "Where is Raed?." Where is Raed 23 Jan. 2004 <http://dear_raed.blogspot.com/>

Personal Communication -- We have decided the communication is something that we want to carry with us. What other information appliances will we want to carry with us?

Dramatically Expressive Medium -- Not only can anyone publish to a global audience, but many of us can communicate compellingly with images, sound, animation, and even video.

Expertise Building -- What percent of what you need to know today to do your job, did you learn in elementary, middle, or high school. What we add to our endeavors does not come from how we are alike, but what we know and how we think that is different.

Redefining Literacy

Reading expands into Exposing Information -- a range of skills involved in

        * finding relevant information on the global electronic library,
        * decode that information (regardless of its format),
        * evaluate the information in order to determine its value, and
        * organize their information into valuable personal digital libraries.

Mathematics expands into Employing Information -- a range of skills involved in processing not only numbers, but also text, images, sound, and video; the goal being to employ that information to solve problems, answer questions, or accomplish goals.

Writing expands into Expressing Ideas Compellingly -- a range of skills involved in communicating compellingly not only with text, but also with images, animation, sound, and video.

There is also a new Ethics in Information -- As the value of information changes, and as information and its delivery become more influential, and consequently, more powerful, the ethical use of information becomes a critical component to any definition of literacy.

This model for 21st century literacy is explored extensively in my new book, Redefining Literacy for the 21st Century, to be released by Linworth Publishing in March, 2004.

Ethics & Information

Information Reliability -- Students must become digital detectives, equipped with skills required to investigate information. Being literacy in the 21st century means being willing, able, and encouraged to ask questions about the answer that you find. The Martin Luther King Web site is at http://www.martinlutherking.org

Information Property -- Christine Pelton may be our poster child for information property. You can read more about here experience at http://. But the problem is not that she is right and the parents and school board members are wrong, but that the value of information has changed.

Information Infrastructure -- Read the references below to be reminded of the costs to our economy caused by milicious attacks on our information infrastructure. The information must flow, or else we will move backwards. ...and times were not better in the past than they could be in a future rich in information and ethical information users.

Being Literate in the 21st Century means being willing, able, & encouraged to ask questions about the answers you find:

Who? -- ...information about the author within the context of our goal.

What? -- ...does the nature of the information help you accomplish your goal?

When? -- ...does the publishing or revision date of the document help accomplish the goal of the assignment?

Where? -- ...where the author or publishing organization sits within a political or ideological spectrum.

Why? -- What does the author have to gain by publishing this information?

Information Property -- 2 Ideas

   1. We will all be information property owners in the future. We need to make our students information property owners, by adjusting how we talk about their work, by allowing them to copyright their work, and by seeking permission to use their work.
   2. Identifying information property owners assures the reliability of the student's information product.

Information Infrastructure

The information, the computers and storage devices that it resides in, and the networks that carry it are THE infrastructure of the 21st century. They are the highways, bridges, ports, and airports upon which our society operate.
