(Return to K12online 2006)

As usual David delivers a masterful keynote. I cannot express how "cool" this conference is. To be able to participate as I can, when I can is the best. That being said, I would have really liked to participate in the Elluminate session this afternoon. Vacation keeps getting in the way of what I want to do. I really liked the train analogy that David used. However, I see the train as public education today and it is traveling in one direction and is out of control. Somehow we need to get on the train as fast and wreckless as it is going and hopefully turn it into another mode of transportation, one maybe more akin to air travel. Where we can travel quickly between locations and the vehicle if necessary can be redirected to go in another direction.

There was a book that I read a long time ago about a society where people had cars, but your car came as a chassy and engine only. You had to add the body. So everyone's car looked distinctive, and acted distinctively. I think that this is, in a sense, what we're talking about, where learning becomes personal -- tied to standards to some extent, but personal, in that the sidetrips become what we remember.

I really appreciate the organizers of the conference for all of the hard work they have and will put in.

I'll certainly double-click that.
