Vanguard Group Chat Transcript
The following is the transcript posted by the Vanguard Group of the Kannapolis City Schools. The conversation ran parallel to an above table conversation about tools for teaching and learning in technology rich environments:
David Warlick (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:11:34
I'm looking forward to reading this.
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:12:01
I am very happy David Warlick is here!
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:12:21
Hey ya'll. I'm glad David W. talks like me. I can understand him!
Scott Rodgers (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:13:04
Maybe you need a group from Kannapolis to help your "experiment"!!
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:13:09
We may need this for on server
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:13:17
Can we use Knitter in our classrooms?
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:13:56
I relate to not having any more time to "do this!"
Stacy Giaccone (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:13:57
how is knitter/twitter like/dislike instant messaging?
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:17:05
Knitter/twitter is a lot like instant messaging except your messages are for everyone to see or comment on. You can ask a group ?'s and...
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:17:51
get answers from all over the world
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:17:53
get short, precise answers quickly
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:18:41
yes! From every where!
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:20:31
You also have the ability to follow people and see their conversations or pose questions and other knitters or Twits can answer them for you.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:21:08
it works better if you follow lots of other twitters and they follow u.
C. Johnson (US) • 2008-08-21 10:21:17
I love lulu and use it. I would like to see my photography class make a calendar and use it as a fundraiser
Cara Wolford (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:22:31
what have you published on lulu?
Debby Smith (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:22:31
beth and cara, do you mind if I choose to share our website?
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:22:54
no
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:22:57

Cara Wolford (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:23:16
ok-i'm sharing google docs
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:23:26
I want to do skype
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:23:54
I will do wikis
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:23:57
FYI most of the programs aren't on my laptop so you'll have to bring your own.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:24:19
wikis, photostory are both there
C. Johnson (US) • 2008-08-21 10:24:28
we have three calendars and sold a few of those. We also have some pictures to be bought but they have not sold. I did create a photo book and it has yet to sell. Our families like things free. :)
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:24:33
not audacity
Scott Rodgers (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:24:35
what part of google docs are you doing? I was doing to show a collarborative effort using docs
Cara Wolford (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:25:09
i guess you can do it if you want...for a small fee
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:25:14
I'd like to share a personal exp. with photostory and how we need not limit our kids
C. Johnson (US) • 2008-08-21 10:25:44
We are using skype with my brother-in-law and his family. the family is enjoying it and we will be getting my 70 year old in-laws on it soon.
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:26:11
I'll do wikis
Scott Rodgers (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:26:23
I'm broke. Do yours and then I will follow up!
Debby Smith (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:29:21
brenda--I have a magazine article about second life you might like.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:29:22
second life? How to set up for classroom? Teen Grid
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:34:03
I'm interested in Quest Atlantis... similar to Second life, but focused on solving specific problems in 4-8.
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:35:45
Me, too, Amy. I saw this at last conf.
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:36:34
Is this the quest that Food Lion was giving out free to some schools? Wonder if the quest they are sponsoring is still available?
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:36:39
Is there the danger of people losing connection with reality like those widows of warcraft, women who lost their husbands due to over use?
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:37:03
I like it being focused. So far in second life all I've seen is 3D websites that have so much less to offer than a good wiki
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:37:34
Yes, Quest Atlantis has been supported by Food Lion in NC. As far as I know it still is.
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:37:40
Happens all the time, Daniel. Good point. We don't want to lose the kids to another world.
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:38:07
All this sounds great and I would like to do more but there's that paper and pencil EOC to deal with.
Kristen Logan (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:38:27
I have been thinking the same thing.
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:38:34
I filled out the info at last year's conf. to get it but I don't think we ever heard anything else. Maybe a follow up is needed.
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:40:27
Wonder how much our score would increase if the EOG/EOCs were put into another format than paper/pencil. Should DPI/Fed. Govt. not step it up?
C. Johnson (US) • 2008-08-21 10:40:52
ill be visiting second life, hopefully this weekend, let you know
Kristen Logan (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:41:05
The students would def enjoy taking the tests more if they were online in my opinion.
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:41:08
Computer Skills
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:41:31
computer skills test and phycis
Cara Wolford (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:41:39
Just because our state assessments are paper/pencil doesn't mean we have to teach paper/pencil all the time.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:42:07
assessing by computer is difficult without 1:1 computers.
Debby Smith (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:42:20
DPI IS trying to convert EOG's to online. Will save huge $$$
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:42:32
if you get too fancy it will be distracting like the ducks
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:42:32
too bad we can't upload quizdom results :-)
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:42:51
I agree that we don't have to teach that way...but as we teach 21st C., it seems so sad the kids are still tested 20th style.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:43:06
Save HUGE $$$ for DPI - we'll still have to buy and maintain the computers and bandwidth.
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:43:13
I think if we develop creative thinkers they will do well on tests too. It's finding a balance.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:43:34
Scott Rodgers, "Teach them to Think!"
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:43:49
It was disasterous in Rowan Cty when the EC kids did some testing and it all crashed b/c DPI got so many hits at one time
Stacy Giaccone (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:43:52
how much bandwidth would second life take away from a school if the class was in a lab
C. Johnson (US) • 2008-08-21 10:44:02
Amen, Scott
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:44:42
I would guess it would be less than a podcast
Stacy Giaccone (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:45:04
:)
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 10:45:26
stealing internet time--we've heard that B4
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 11:35:22
I
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 11:35:41
I really love my boss, Brenda McCombs!!
Katie Bogle (NC) • 2008-08-21 11:53:26
Brenda rocks!
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:02:21
you are too kind.
Melissa Pleasants (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:02:59
they are simply truthful!
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:06:53
I tested ustream the other day and didn't see a significant upswing in bandwidth
Scott Rodgers (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:07:06
Awesome!
Scott Rodgers (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:07:27
We'll test the first few weeks of school!
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:09:49
sounds good, Scott. Let me know and I can get a before and after reading
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:12:25
How to get teachers to use wikis? bribery aside...
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:13:22
I don't see the wikis as useful due to memory upload limitations
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:13:46
working on the space problem - I just need to conqueror my time problem. Stay tuned.
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:13:53
I will use my weebly site more
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:17:00
anyone found a free solution for wiki file storage? David mentioned something called locker but can't find it
C. Johnson (US) • 2008-08-21 12:22:32
what was the name of the site that makes online cartoons?
Cara Wolford (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:25:07
toon do or something?
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:25:40
Daniel is good a making those cartoons
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:33:34
david.warlick 1@gmail.com to have student sub-directories. Anyone try it?
Stacy Giaccone (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:33:50
there is also goanimate.com which makes actual cartoons where toondoo makes comic books (still shots)
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:34:00
www.toondoo.com
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:35:17
They are just static strips but it is drag and drop
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:36:35
cara sent this weblink for pbwiki storage scholarships. Any takers? http://www.thejournal.com/articles/23133
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:36:48
gliffy looks like inspiration
Stacy Giaccone (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:37:02
goanimate.com actually lets you animate to create the live action cartoon
Cara Wolford (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:38:30
I just linked my coaching calendar to our coaches' weebly. so exciting!
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:39:54
google docs, weebly, and Palm docs-to-go do not like Office 2007. Save down to 2003
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:40:21
now you tell me!!!!!!
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:42:32
could we invite teachers to school calander for overlay of their google calandar?
Cara Wolford (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:43:20
If the school calendar is public, teachers can just search the public calendars and add it to their own Google calendar.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:43:29
It is public
Katie Bogle (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:51:38
If we would like to purchase a domain with weebly, (i.e. www.albmedia.org) are we allowed to do so?
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:52:23
It is about $25.00 a year. Don't know who would object
Katie Bogle (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:52:36
KCS policy?
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:52:38
There is no policy against it
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:53:29
There were some guidelines about web pages independent from KCS website...
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:53:57
they will need to be revised along with adding 2.0 guidelines
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:56:15
Daniel B. had to deal with the old web policy. I think he couldn't use KCS or ALBHS in title. Had to be Mr. Bryant's page
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:58:49
RSS feed is in settings in PBWiki
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:59:14
I sent the students directly to the site unlike now where we have links off of the ALB page
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:59:29
I did mine originally in geocities off of yahoo
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 12:59:44
it was a pain in the butt to update
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:08:13
www.downes.ca
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:13:05
I'm supposed to talk to the school board next month about an updated policy. What should I consider?
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:14:38
some language about using teachers using web pages for educational purposes even if personal ie weebly
Debby Smith (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:15:21
For Camtasia lovers... If you have a Mac, Camtasia does not work. There is a $20 program that does, however.
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:15:51
glogster.com
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:15:54
I'd agree. The same would apply for PBwiki or Wikispaces- teachers creating their own one for their classroom.
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:17:25
It would be nice to continue on the idea of creating a standard e-mail account for students at school that can follow them
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:17:47
how young should they start with an email account?
Jay Kepley (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:18:15
as soon as they can read their name
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:18:30
when in the tech scos do they implement that skill
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:18:33
younger than 3rd grade?
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:18:36
no
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:18:52
3rd I think would be a good start
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:19:14
For younger students we need to look at something like Gaggle.net, where teachers get and questionable email first.
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:19:20
not younger than 3rd grade, but it is a good place to start
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:19:50
what is wrong w/ 2nd graders e-mailing?
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:20:33
I've got no problem with them emailing, as long as it is monitored....
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:21:09
Of course free email typically says 13 or older without parental involvement.
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:21:14
I agree....I think the monitorring is key...students draft then teacher approves before they are sent, etc.
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:21:53
the 'age 13' would mean teachers would need to probably send them from a teacher/class acct.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:22:18
it shows up in the SCOS in grade 5
Amy Archer (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:24:43
... or Gaggle allows email accounts organized under teachers and filtered(checked)
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:26:56
how do we get past OMG LOL?
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:27:13
in our microwave society I don't know
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:28:33
good pt brenda....there are 2 languages-- IM, chat speak and grammatically-correct English. There are appropriate times for both.
Cara Wolford (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:28:58
Do we have to get past it (OMG LOL)? Or do we teach appropriate audiences/situations?
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:29:05
back to the school board - they're going to want parameters. Can students have teacher "friends"
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:29:41
good question. Because as soon as it gets out they will want to join your facebook
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:29:58
I'm not friends w/ my college students until the semester is over....some early research says kids want their own space.
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:30:04
The teacher would have to create a safer space to create this type of idea
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:30:16
I found my college sister in laws facebook and saw some wierd stuff
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:30:35
just by googling her name
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:31:09
I found my son - equally weird and he didn't understand why I freaked out over a photo 'montage' that one of his friend posted...
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:31:47
facebook has a clause when you 1st sign up...it's google-able, it gets archived every night which means once you post a photo and leave it over night, it's in the facebook archives forever.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:31:56
I'm more worried about students harrassing teachers or accusing them of inappropriate relationships online
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:32:03
we've had teachers lose jobs over f-book, my space pics.
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:32:31
with this much access the caveats that we had growing up are not there
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:32:37
yes there is a very thin line
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:33:22
Cabarrus County already has a policy forbidding social networking linking but there can be good reasons for linking, too.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:34:07
...forbidding linking between students and teachers that is
Debby Smith (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:34:32
Just so I understand: I can be googled
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:34:58
anyone can be googled
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:35:20
it just depends on how accurate you are on the web
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:35:21
you can google your name and see if anything comes up on you
Debby Smith (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:35:27
and found, but they can't see my profile unless I friend them? (lost the end of my post)
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:36:14
When I put my classroom site up years ago google found me but I was like 10 pages into "Daniel Bryant"
Beth Spell (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:36:33
The profile can sometimes be public but your page is private...it all depends on how you set it up
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:36:40
I haven't tried it since vanguard
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:39:35
one approach-- facebook group for your class....teachers restrict themselves to publishing only in 'public' space like the group wall.
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:39:56
facebook had some hacking last weekend..there was a wall posting about a 'secret' crush that had a virus/spyware attached.
Debby Smith (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:40:33
Oh, my, I got several of those! I didn't open them but would like to get rid of them.
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:40:51
click delete on them debby that'll do it
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:45:24
http://www.csus.edu/indiv/p/peachj/edte230/copyrig ht/quiz.htm
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:45:48
drew what is your link about?
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:47:37
oh sorry- copyright quiz...cara says links' broken...hold on!
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:48:17
take away sapce between g and h and it works...
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:52:21
I think I'm getting ready to be wowed by animoto
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 13:56:16
anyone use flock before?
Daniel Bryant (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:56:37
no i've always used firefox
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:56:39
no flocking for me.
Brenda McCombs (NC) • 2008-08-21 13:57:30
anyone using Digg?
drewpolly (us) • 2008-08-21 14:00:23
no but it looks interesting..tinker w/ it tonight.
Debby Smith (NC) • 2008-08-21 14:04:24
My son gets most of his news from Digg. Some is goofy, some is serious world news.
