Knitter Chat Transcript from Emerging Technologies Conference
Here is the transcript for the backchannel conversations at Nobel Greenough's Emerging Technologies Conference in April 2009 [Return to the Online Handouts]
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:35:23
:) The presentation looks like a Prezi presentation (prezi.com)
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:39:41
looking forward to hearing David again. He always adds his own spin to everything.
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:43:42
looks like lots of twitterers here,
jakeH (us) • 2009-04-22 08:44:03
What are grits?
jakeH (us) • 2009-04-22 08:44:15
What are grits?
Doug (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:44:19
similar to farina
Don (US) • 2009-04-22 08:44:37
I don't know anything about this stuff.
lally (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:45:41
Master learning must be willing to learn everyday. Interesting
wtuttle (US) • 2009-04-22 08:45:50
PreziDesktop looks good on the big screen
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:46:10
love it, David models what he hopes from each of us - and shares something new he learned.
mssanderson (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:47:48
David gets around!
Barb (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:49:26
Cool way to link to the map - gotta learn how to do that!
Ced Paine (US) • 2009-04-22 08:49:36
I like the term "colearners"
jillo (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:52:40
prezzie desktop is cool
kelly schwenkmeyer (us) • 2009-04-22 08:54:16
my head is spinning 15 min. into the day!
Marty Wrin (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:54:20
I wonder if Second Life will ever be widely used or if it represents the first generation of something that will eventually become big.
Jennifer Zacharis (US) • 2009-04-22 08:55:12
What did he use to make this presentation? Prezi? http://prezi.com/
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:55:59
C
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:56:33
Communications technology is constantly changing - will change how we look at education/learning
Kathe L (US) • 2009-04-22 08:57:15
do cellphones represent the human desire/need to be connected?
jillo (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:58:35
do you think those 5 new exobytes are really valid information or just twitterings?
Barb (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:59:02
Aren't some tweets useful?
christine (US) • 2009-04-22 08:59:19
Textbooks will soon be obsolete.
wtuttle (US) • 2009-04-22 08:59:31
Definitely
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 08:59:38
important to filter - and teach students to filter - to decide what is relevant and what is not
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:00:46
@christine - not soon enough - textbooks present obstacles to learning for kids with disabilities
christine (US) • 2009-04-22 09:01:04
students definitely need to learn web searching skills at earlier ages
Beth Riley (US) • 2009-04-22 09:01:32
Way Cool Beans
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:01:43
@barb - my twitter PLN has expanded my learning exponentially
Don (US) • 2009-04-22 09:02:06
Might things like SL and twitter be too much to filter? Paying attention to the avatar more than the data available?
Marty Wrin (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:03:26
When should the introduction to technology begin and what is the best level of exposure in early elementary?
wtuttle (US) • 2009-04-22 09:04:23
@Marty A.S.A.P
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:04:37
Can that Prezi presentation be shared?
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:04:50
we can't filter the technology - we need to teach children to make good decisions and how to make wise/safe/relevant choices
wtuttle (US) • 2009-04-22 09:04:57
@Marco yes, and you can create groups
lally (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:05:12
How does this fit with MCAS and how do we deal with it
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:05:29
@wtuttle, is it currently shared? likely not...that's ok :)
wtuttle (US) • 2009-04-22 09:06:24
@marco, probably not
addamy (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:08:17
evaluation!
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:10:01
Biology textbooks are outdated every 2-3 years in high school, 1 year in college sometimes
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:10:34
What are basic literacy skills? what do we expect our students to be able to do? understand?
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:11:23
@magistram, If I had to say one thing, it is the complete realization that all information they could need is within their grasp.
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:12:12
This realization is the basic literacy of the 1950's. Without an understanding of how to access all that information, students are "illiterate"
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:12:38
heard Will Richardson last week say, We can correct errors online (wikipedia). How do we correct errors in textbooks?
wtuttle (US) • 2009-04-22 09:12:47
Knitter should be hooked up to twitter with a common tag
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:13:21
it doesn't seem like anyone is using the hashtag, unless I heard it wrong? (#noble09)
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:13:26
AP French textbook used in my school had to be set aside -too many errors
Seth Battis (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:14:04
marco, you heard the hashtag right -- there are a few of us using it too! #nobles09
Seth Battis (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:14:26
ah, marco: missing an S
wtuttle (US) • 2009-04-22 09:14:42
I missed that
Don (US) • 2009-04-22 09:14:55
We highlight the textbook errors as teachable moments. Students can see that everything (whether print or electronic) has to be looked at critically.
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:15:07
@sethbattis aha! thanks
Barbara Peskin (US) • 2009-04-22 09:15:53
Interested in the answer to MCAS question below, also -- how are these innovators reaching administrators and/or DOE/MCAS creators
Barbara Peskin (US) • 2009-04-22 09:17:06
How can students advocate for changes/redefining how teachers integrate technology.
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:18:24
Similarly, how can students be given a voice in the classroom/school?
christine (US) • 2009-04-22 09:18:31
excellent question
Seth Battis (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:18:35
barbara, upward management/reform is tough. How can we as teachers better hear our student's voices/needs?
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:19:14
educate every member of the community (teachers, admin, students) who is willing to learn
Barbara Peskin (us) • 2009-04-22 09:20:27
seth -- I'm thinking about reaching teachers not yet knowing about/how to embrace these ideas. They need time and learning in some ways provided via administrators
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:20:32
Tech literacy becomes part of the culture. Early adopters spread the word at all levels
Barbara Peskin (us) • 2009-04-22 09:20:46
so the administrators need to be leaders
Barbara Peskin (us) • 2009-04-22 09:21:13
early adopters work but can be slow and would be great if adminstrators are early adopters :-)
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:21:25
how many of us waited for approval from administrators before we explored and applied these tools on our own?
Kathe L (US) • 2009-04-22 09:21:36
if we expect kids to be learners, we have to model that
Seth Battis (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:21:36
barbara, agreed -- time, resources, examples from colleagues and co-learners. i've found that sitting in on classes broadens my own teaching perspective
Barbara Peskin (us) • 2009-04-22 09:21:56
administrators don't need to be the very first but we are a little beyond very first
Jean (Ma) • 2009-04-22 09:22:07
Tufte wrote a great book about using visuals to show info earthquake ex is in same vein
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:22:14
All levels need to lead - students in the know should be allowed to shine, teachers should be encouraged to learn, admin should allow broad use
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:22:30
Regarding early adopters: an interesting image at : http://is.gd/tSRy
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:22:59
You can also use a tool like the one being shown at wordle.net
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:23:26
@Marco thanks for the graphic.
Marty Wrin (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:23:34
Fascinating, it's exciting to think about how to use these tools with my students.
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:24:08
At a certain point, there's a tipping point- tech integration becomes the norm, no longer special
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:24:32
David models asking great questions
Seth Battis (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:24:41
admins also need to model use -- all levels of education need to be populated by learners: otherwise the school structure fails to adapt!
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:25:06
love the Google logo for Earth Day
Barbara Peskin (us) • 2009-04-22 09:25:31
right seth. My administrators are great and supportive with technology but we aren't all using these tools yet. I wonder if they could use some of the tools for their own groups/discussions/etc. would be neat
Seth Battis (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:26:24
our dean of faculty is wrestling with how to use our teaching tools to lead/manage faculty
KarenJan (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:28:10
what is he using? I missed it
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:28:13
E.g. if Google Docs becomes the tool for minutes of meetings, if info is collected using Google Forms or SurveyMonkey, admin is demonstrating simple integration of tech (and saving $ on paper/printing)
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:28:42
Another tool similar to Google Docs and easier to share: Etherpad.com
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:29:03
phrase net
Jean (Ma) • 2009-04-22 09:29:44
New for me - manyeyes I use wordle and tagcloud
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:30:20
http://flowingdata.com/2009/04/01/phrase-net-shows -the-secret-life-of-words/
Ced Paine (US) • 2009-04-22 09:30:33
We used Google Docs for our AISNE accreditation work this year. Result: virtually all admins and faculty have now used it.
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:32:01
We use Google apps, but how many schools block them still?
Don (US) • 2009-04-22 09:32:23
Be careful! If you just type Phun into the address, you will get a "Girls wanting to have Phun" site.
Seth Battis (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:32:39
heh... the trick is making something vital _only_ available through new technology. _that_ drives adoption. :)
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:32:48
Thanks for the warning
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:33:29
That animation is from this TED talk! - - > http://is.gd/ihws
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:34:32
@Magistram CIS 339 is a school in the Bronx with a 1-to-1 laptop program that fully integrates all the Google apps, even for administration.
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:35:05
I'm excited that Maine will be 1:1 gr 7-12 in September.
jillo (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:39:52
our all-school lower school literary magazine was published
jillo (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:40:28
oops. published with lulu last year.... very easy process.
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:42:08
Great example of how existing information can be leveraged to be used for something else: wefeelfine.org
addamy (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:45:10
I hope we're gonna see a citation at the end...
Marty Wrin (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:45:17
How important is it for students to cite sources and give credit for content when preparing presentations like this?
andrea weaver (ma) • 2009-04-22 09:46:25
what is the website of consuelo malino video
kelly schwenkmeyer (us) • 2009-04-22 09:46:38
where can we get that video?
bd (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:46:56
The media makes the student research and message more personal
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:48:03
It also blurs the line between student and teacher! Who would have expected to learn something from that 15 year old in so compelling a fashion?
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:48:53
teachers teach students,students teach teachers
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 09:49:51
Related: 14 year old student started Kids-Vs-Globalwarming.com (http://is.gd/tTbI)
andrea weaver (ma) • 2009-04-22 10:14:53
what program did you use for your presentation
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 10:21:43
@andrea If you mean the last presentation, prezi.com was used :)
Marty Wrin (MA) • 2009-04-22 10:46:29
Is twitter useful if you use a locked profile that requires your permission in order for someone to follow you?
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 10:46:36
I'm curious what tool was used to create that twitter network map
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 10:47:13
@marty I would say so, since many of the people I "follow" have updates protected. You can stil interact, but have simply made what you say not searchable.
Barb (MA) • 2009-04-22 10:47:15
Me too...how do you see the map?
Ced Paine (US) • 2009-04-22 10:49:46
http://flowingdata.com/2008/03/12/17-ways-to-visua lize-the-twitter-universe/
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 10:52:22
Wordle.net also lets you customise the font, color, orientation, etc.
Ced Paine (US) • 2009-04-22 10:54:13
BTW, there's a whole separate discussion about this conference on Twitter. Search on #nobles09
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 10:56:12
I don't really understand protecting updates on Twitter. Seems to defeat the purpose
Marty Wrin (MA) • 2009-04-22 10:58:28
I shut down most of my internet profile while I'm job-made FB, Twitter, etc private and just left Linked In public.
Marty Wrin (MA) • 2009-04-22 10:59:54
oops - that's "job searching" I was repeatedly warned about potential downside of Web 2.0 profile so I limited or dismantled most of mine.
Ced Paine (US) • 2009-04-22 11:02:14
@magistram Agreed. There are much better designed tools, but Twitter lovers love a crowd.
wtuttle (MA) • 2009-04-22 11:04:16
@Ced Paine that's a broken link you have a space in visualize
wtuttle (MA) • 2009-04-22 11:04:21
http://flowingdata.com/2008/03/12/17-ways-to-visua lize-the-twitter-universe/
MagistraM (MA) • 2009-04-22 11:05:19
I always keep in mind that everything on the web is searchable - nothing is truly private
wtuttle (MA) • 2009-04-22 11:06:28
@Ced Paine that's a broken link, space in visualize
Ced Paine (US) • 2009-04-22 11:07:56
Let's try again: http://flowingdata.com/2008/03/12/17-ways-to-visua lize-the-twitter-universe/
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 12:23:14
That one also has the space. try this one: http://is.gd/24Y that should work!
dale (MA) • 2009-04-22 13:16:20
Looking for colleagues from Lawrence School....
dale (MA) • 2009-04-22 13:17:56
How do you find people at Nobles if you don't know who you are looking for?
Marco Morales (MA) • 2009-04-22 13:30:24
Has anyone used (www.udutu.com)? I just stumbled across this, and wonder how it stands up to other curriculum planning tools.
