Amanda Spence (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:30:14
Yes, the summer assignment for tenth grade pairing blog is http://thinkgloballyactlocally.org

Amanda Spence (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:31:00
The Early College also did a blog for their summer assignments

Your Mama (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:31:18
We're on the cutting edge here, for sure

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 11:31:50
so is a blog a blog or are there "better" ones to use?

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 11:32:11
10 minutes left of battery life

Your Mama (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:32:12
Did you hear about Obama's flight?

Tweety bird (us) • 2008-08-15 11:32:21
Isn't a blog an online journal?

Amanda Spence (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:32:45
I'm not sure which blog is the best. I think that Valerie likes edublogs.

Your Mama (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:33:19
shay it don't shpray it

Tweety bird (us) • 2008-08-15 11:35:11
What is the purpose of the "blog"?

Paul Martin (US) • 2008-08-15 11:36:12
how do we use this in the classroom??? ideas other than english

Tweety bird (us) • 2008-08-15 11:36:39
No Clue!!!!

ppiland (us) • 2008-08-15 11:36:40
Could we see the screen better if the lights were dimmer

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:37:22
what about the flight

Paul Martin (US) • 2008-08-15 11:37:39
are you sure you want to see better

Amanda Spence (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:37:47
You can ask the students specific questions that they blog about with one another. You can also put a link to a news article and then have them respond to the article using the blog.

Tweety bird (us) • 2008-08-15 11:38:09
R U SERIOUS!!!

Paul Martin (US) • 2008-08-15 11:38:35
no but I would like to hear better

Your Mama (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:38:45
sherious ash a sheart attack, tweet

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:39:20
if you take a class online - blogging is a great tool!if you have a question or want to discuss it.

Your Mama (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:39:21
ask a question, and I'll shoot!

Tweety bird (us) • 2008-08-15 11:39:51
Doesn't that lead to cheating?

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:40:05
sure thing

Tweety bird (us) • 2008-08-15 11:40:37
Then what is the point?

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:40:39
as I was told we - give them the ability to find the answer! the 21st century school

Tweety bird (us) • 2008-08-15 11:41:16
Why make everyone work when one person will do it all?

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:41:48
just let them all use their phones and all papers will be easy to grade

Tweety bird (us) • 2008-08-15 11:42:04
too shay!!!

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:42:43
ka-boom

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 11:43:06
have teachers buy all the kids computers because we make so much money

Mary (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:43:31
The library is open from 7:00 am to 5:00 p.m. 4 days a week and during lunches--thus giving them access to computers.

Tweety bird (us) • 2008-08-15 11:43:31
It is amazing how we aren't allowed to go to certain websites even though educational, yet our students can IM

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:43:33
that is a great idea

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 11:44:07
it's just a brick in the wall

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:44:30
if you can get on the computer - send in a work order and have the site unblocked

Paul Martin (US) • 2008-08-15 11:44:50
how do you grade blog assignments

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:45:14
100 all the way around

Mary (NC) • 2008-08-15 11:46:27
Blog grading rubric http://www.rawsthorne.org/bit/medit/gpt/docs/EDU34 84EduBlogRubric.pdf

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 11:46:52
Grade blogs by content and met requirements

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 11:52:22
hello

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 11:53:09
Wiki are not reliable resources. so why use them?

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 11:54:32
betty - we have need of a cappucino from 7-11 not starbuckis

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 11:56:30
if you have a student with accomdations for "teacher notes" then wiki would help

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 11:56:45
Textbooks aren't always reliable either so why do we use them?

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 11:57:09
I can't change the textbook any time that I want!

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 11:57:32
Choose to blog!

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 11:58:15
As a teacher, I can decifer if the text is wrong. As a student, they can't determine if the info in a wiki is incorrect.

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 11:58:57
And that is our job to teach in 21st century world...and by the way this is not Aleena responding on this one.

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 11:59:15
that' true

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 11:59:24
from Aleena: you can set up a wiki to choose who is editing the content.

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 11:59:34
Then teach them to use a web based site that is reliable.

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 11:59:41
It's not like anybody can change it at any time

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 11:59:58
Have you gone to wikipedia?

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:00:14
Meghan Doyle: That is also a good idea...Yes I used Wiki's as a principal with my staff

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 12:00:41
for us getting to computer etc is a challenge for classroom teacher

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:00:47
It would be important to teach the students the which wikis are reliable

ppiland (us) • 2008-08-15 12:00:53
our battery is going dead!!!!!

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 12:01:06
getting your class to one I mean

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:01:10
I can understand english using this, but math, science?

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:01:30
losing power - - -OOOO NOOOO

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:01:31
History even.

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:01:42
losing power here too!!!

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:02:05
I agree...that is a challenge at any school...I would also say that we have to create a demand for the use of computers...

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:02:42
Computers don't have to just be the desktops or laptops...have you seen an iPhone or any of the new cell phones kids are using...small computers

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:03:21
Visit the website Project K-Nect and see how NC teachers are teaching Algebra I with cell phones...doing much better than their peers with face-to-face

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:03:22
And that too is a problem not just a solution. Cheating is on the rise due to these technologies.

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:03:26
We all don't have enough to go around in the classrooms

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:03:51
Do we have any data that cheating is on the rise...or do we just have access to more proof?

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:04:28
I don't need hard evidence to see it with my own eyes and listen to what the kids are saying that they are doing!

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:04:53
Meghan Doyle: By the way the last few responses have been from me again not Aleena...

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:05:17
Aleena: It would nice for the high school to get a grant so we have one computer per child.

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 12:05:19
exactly but if we are all "hooked up" we can't see anyway...we see what we want to c! Eh?

What do we consider the difference between cheating and collaborating?

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:06:02
Have you ever just sat back and listened to the kids conversations in the classroom?

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:06:19
Meghan Doyle: That is getting to be a very fine line...

teacher (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:06:25
*yawn*

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:06:27
When the work that is done is only done by a few not the majority

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 12:06:37
good point katrina...got to define it from get go

Katrina (US) • 2008-08-15 12:06:42
Oh yes, I'm very well aware of their conversations concerning cheating.

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:07:03
That happens in a classroom face-to-face when we do group work and do not set up structured ways to collaborate

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:07:13
When you get the answers to a test from a text...that is cheating! It can be done on this too.

ppiland (us) • 2008-08-15 12:07:51
The Honors Court is a great resource

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:09:28
Tis the time for a break!

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:09:32
Meghan Doyle: Kids can cheat if they really want to...that's when it falls to us to design assignments that are relevant and compelling

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:10:25
Relevant? A test is relevant, and yet...they cheat!!

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:12:40
Maybe the way we test is not as effective as it could be if we understood how to relate to their culture.

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:13:05
We need to be creative in our testing to prevent cheating.

tweety bird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:13:26
Then why did we spend yesterday looking at EOC scores?

Paul Martin (US) • 2008-08-15 12:13:48
Teaching right from wrong is always a job hat teachers have to dot

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:13:49
i still don't understand why we base everything on ONE TEST - EOC

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:13:59
I'm not saying I agree with the state. Do we teach the test or the student?

you tell me - that determines pass or fail - not me the teacher

Paul Martin (US) • 2008-08-15 12:15:08
How about one test per 9 weeks?

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:15:19
Doyle: We don't...it is only 25% of some classes...the rest you get to decide.

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 12:15:26
you teach a student always

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:15:54
even at 25% - they must achieve a level 3

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:16:12

It doesn't matter really what is done in the classroom, the EOC is the decision maker.

tweetybird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:18:14
Hello MR. Warren!!

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:18:17
that is the problem - we have a lot of kids that may never achieve a level 3 - what about them? they fall through the cracks

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:18:21
Doyle:...and with waivers...you really get all of the decision...We seem to have a lot of reasons not to change...but the 25 students in front of us every day should be more compelling reasons to change

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:19:12
Doyle: Don't you like his suit?

tweetybird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:19:38
There are those that don't deserve a waiver that get it anyway!! Yes, his suit is nice.

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 12:19:47
the EOC is just one decision maker,,,just part of it

tweetybird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:20:08
Not for teacher bonuses!!!

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:20:14
waiver for the EOC??? that is determined by his teacher

tweetybird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:20:45
Not always!!

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:21:00
that should not happen

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 12:21:10
so$$$$$$$$$ it all comes down to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

tweetybird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:21:15
the waiver or the bonus?

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:21:18
Doyle: Exactly Jones...you've got it! Tweety Bird: Have you seen the sorry bonus we're getting this year?

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:21:48
the waiver

tweetybird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:21:56
Unfortunately yes!! So, I want to know why do we try so hard every year to get crapped on in the end?

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:22:02
no the bonus

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 12:22:06
the root of all evil?????????

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:22:07
no BOTH

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:22:49
Doyle: I don't know...after taxes it wasn't much anyway...I, like you, am doing it for the students..but I like to have a basis for comparison and want a score to keep me honest

Jones (us) • 2008-08-15 12:22:55
I will not be bought so easily

Corbo (NC) • 2008-08-15 12:23:29
By using these technologies, not avoiding them, we at least can try to teach students to be RESPONSIBLE users of the technology they will be using in the future, with or without us!

tweetybird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:23:40
I have had a student put straight 'C' for the whole EOC and pass it with a 78.

Betty Boop (US) • 2008-08-15 12:24:09
i saw that last year - she never opened the book and passed 82

Aleena Overman (US) • 2008-08-15 12:24:11
sounds like a good strategy!

tweetybird (nc) • 2008-08-15 12:24:34
