Knitter Transcript

This is the transcript for the user chat using Knitter during sessions at the Bear Academy in Byron, MN on July 3, 2009:

Jen Hegna (MN) • 2009-08-03 08:17:31
Fabulous!

Clovis (NC) • 2009-08-03 08:17:40
I look forward to reading your conversation....

Carl Anderson (MN) • 2009-08-03 08:18:07
Is this archival?

> Yep!

Jen Hegna (MN) • 2009-08-03 08:26:36
How do move from "cell phones as a distraction" to cell phones as a learning tool?

> ''I think that it will simply take time. The students will abuse the technologies -- from our point of view -- for a while. It will take time before they start to use it more specifically for learning. A lot of it has to do with the activies we give them -- as to how focused they are.

All that said, I think that we should pay attention to how they are using the technologies for their own reasons. There may be hints there on how we might use them instructionally.''

sue (by) • 2009-08-03 08:30:05
Do you think actual destination conferences will continue?

> I hope so and I believe so. You can't duplicate the energy that is generated by being with other educators. Also, there continues to be a place for face to face presentations and workshops and even lectures. It's just that they are no longer the only mode.

JenGreen (MN) • 2009-08-03 08:33:38
"I am not preparing kids for my future, I am preparing them for theirs"--this is a key shift that educators need to embrace.

Jen Hegna (MN) • 2009-08-03 08:44:17
What value do textbooks have in our classroom in the digital age?

> ''Very little -- I believe. I was in an online discussion a while back and someone -- of authority -- said, "The textbook industry is the enemy of 21st century education." I wouldn't go that far. But I'm reluctant to believe that they have the spirit of innovation required to retool. I wonder if the solutions may come from the Open Source community instead.

It's one of the most interesting conversations regarding education right now.''

Carl Anderson (MN) • 2009-08-03 08:50:41
Clay Burell at Change.org is running an open collaboration project this year for history teachers globablly to have their students question the facts in textbooks.

> I didn't know this. Clay is a very creative fellow and excellent blogger. He's one of those international educator bloggers I was talking about.

Carl Anderson (MN) • 2009-08-03 08:50:46
here is the link: http://education.change.org/blog/view/teaching_aga inst_the_history_textbook_wiki_project_invitation

> I couldn't get that link to work, but Googled it and found this: http://xrl.in/2u16

JenGreen (MN) • 2009-08-03 08:56:50
I could get so caught up in all this--how do you limit/sort/edit all this to keep your sanity?

> You do the best that you can. A good starting place is to dedicate 15 minutes a day.

Jen Hegna (MN) • 2009-08-03 09:01:35
I love the excel demo - real world application!

carolynne (MN) • 2009-08-03 09:04:56
where are we teaching excel skills like this?

> ''It's a good question. I think that first, teachers need to become practiced in cooking data using tools like Excel, for the students, then it becomes more clear to us where we can best work it into their tool box as an information artisanship tool.

The bigger question is where do we work in Employing the Information -- regardless of the tool.''

Jen Hegna (MN) • 2009-08-03 09:13:01
Is our classrooms adequately preparing our students for this world? Where do we start?

> I think that the projects you've put in your rooms is a fantastic start. It gives teachers the opportunity to teach from the digital realm. If teachers are bringing more Internet-based content into the classroom, it gives them the opportunity to say, "I found this last night, and here's how I found it, and here are the questions I asked when I was deciding on the information. It gives us the opportunity to practice contemporary literacy.

Mindy (MN) • 2009-08-03 09:13:47
How do we help students move past wikipedia? And how do we help ourselves recognize plagiarism?

> As I said yesterday, your students should be accustomed to your asking, "But how do you know this is true. Show me the evidence." We also need to be prepared to present evidence of what we are teaching. Plagiarism is usually not so difficult to identify. Kids don't plagiarize because they're smart. They plagiarize because they are lazy.

JenGreen (MN) • 2009-08-03 09:14:01
We need to start with critical consumer skills. Kids just seem to take everything in at equal weight and credibility.

Jen Hegna (MN) • 2009-08-03 09:15:14
I am impressed with the number of people here listening today - what about those who are not? Will they understand the direction we need to go?

Jen (MN) • 2009-08-03 09:27:39
Thanks for sharing so many new sites with us! I am a little overwhelmed but excited to start looking at the new possibilities.
