dcnavis85: L2VG: virtual library in Second Life ... librarians are beginning to use it

Some librarians at the university level are starting to use SL for creating virtual libraries, but not so much in K-12 school libraries. SL is still inaccessible to children. That said, there are other opportunities out there.

rcormack: #L2VG In a session on Gaming with David Warlick. He's given us tags to use in our blog posts and tweets--smart.

murcha: #L2VG Learning about video gaming in education with David Warlick

dharter: "Gamers are MORE social - better collaborators - than the previous generation" l2vg

murcha: Quote video games are “Exceptionally tasty patterns of reality” L2VG

I really like this one. It says a lot about the video game experiences.

murcha: Video playing generation are more sociable, open to team problem solving L2VG

murcha: Video games are becoming increasingly more complex because the brain demands it L2VG

This is not reseearch based. But it makes sense, bares some thinking about as we create learning experiences for our students.

dharter: l2vg games are developing into ones where the users themselves "build the world" and make the game what it is....

This comment is based on Spore, a new game by Will Wright.

dharter: "The real fun of games is the "what if"" - Warlick L2VG

Yes! It's about playing within an information landscape that is entirely responsive to the player. Kids have an intrinsic need to "Safely make mistake.

murcha: Watching spore a great video game= lots of whatif's and what is the impact on those decisions made L2VG

murcha: @jomcleay Video games has huge potential as has all gaming for education and prospective employment opportunities L2VG

murcha: pikmin is a video game that has no rules, so players have to determine the rules to achieve their own goals and solve problems L2VG

I'm glad that this resonated with you. For clarity, there are rules in the game, but the player doesn't know the rules. Playing the game is a process of learning the rules and how to use the rules to accomplish the goals.

murcha: Student quote "I have to power down when I go to school." - a high school student L2VG

murcha: Student quote "I have to power down when I go to school" - a high school student L2VG

murcha: Student quote2 Why do I have to learn about Caesar? Hell, I’m building Rome every afternoon.” L2VG

The above three quotes come from a presentation that Marc Prenski does.

brightcandle: How do you find out about trends like improv everywhere? Is it through your son? Do you have other advisors? Thanks. L2VG

I learned what I have by attending some gaming in education conferences and through video recommendations for YouTube. Ewan McIntosh talked about Alternate Reality Games (ARG) in an Unconference yesterday, which has the same feel, though there appears to be a digital element. Here are his bookmarks on the topic.

dharter: Video Games are not a "distraction" they are part of these kids' lives. - Warlick l2vg

murcha: Instead of written assignment, get students to create a movie trailer for a novel studied. L2VG

This is not to say that all of Amy's assignments were like this. She still gives traditional assignments as well as other more community-based projects.

murcha: Quote "Education that targets you but does not include you may not be worth sitting still for." This is a quote from Clay Shirky. He said that "Media that targest you..." I substituted "Education." L2VG

dharter: Watching human tetrs....can't look away. l2vg
