Episode 50 — The Future of Education
December 29th, 2005
Yippee! It’s my 50th podcast. It shouldn’t surprise you that it doesn’t seem like that many, but I’ve been pumping them out just about every week. And to think it was just an experiment. To be truthful, each one could be my last. It is a lot of work putting these things together, especially with the editing that I have to do to make myself seem nearly intelligent.
This episode focuses on the future, which seems appropriate here at the tail end of 2005. Earlier this month, I conducted some workshops and spoke a conferences in New York and Texas. Each day included at least an introduction to podcasting. For each group, I walked around asking educators to describe what they believe they will see as they enter their classrooms in 2015 — ten years from now. I recorded and included in this podcast, most of their answers, which were interesting, insightful, and often entertaining. I’m writing a weblog about some of the ideas in 2¢ Worth. At the end of the podcast, I add my own two cents worth, describing the classroom of 2015, as I see it.
I want to mention here as well as in the podcast, the upcoming PodcasterCon, to be held next Saturday, January 7, 2006 in Murphy Hall on the campus of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. This promises to be an important event, as we podcasters and podcast listeners continue to define the technology and its affect on society, culture, education, pleasure, and virtual all other aspects of life in the 21st century.
Till next time!

I like the outtakes…nice to see the human side. It is something that I feel many people worry we may lose in the far off future as we become more dependent on these new communication technologies.
Just wanted to mention another blog that your readers my find interesting. Check out techCarl at http://calashley.typepad.com/techcarl/. It’s a place were future ed. leaders take a look at our responsibilities and concerns in the realm of educational technologies. Any input on what you believe school administrators roles should be are appreciated.

Wow! It just confirms once again that we are on the cusp of something big in education. I also liked the outakes, but I was suprised at how many people were still thinking about digital textbooks and automated marking. I love the open classroom idea where students are functioning much like they would in a buisiness - collaborating to solve problems. Keep those podcasts coming!

The montage of comments predicting the classroom in 2015 was wonderful. The comments on language learning technology were great. The idea of having a universal handheld translator which helps second-language learners better understand English, and therefore, their academic content, is an exciting idea. It’s just the project I am working on with www.eslcomputer.com .
The idea of a distributed, connected classroom from the home was inspiring. I’ve never heard of that - and the person who described it made it seem like a given!
Congrats on your 50th ‘cast, David!

Hey, David,
I feel like I know you after listening to you for months. I brag about you frequently because I think so many of my colleagues could benefit from listening to you. I host a couple podcasts, too; but I won’t plug ‘em here without your permission. Google me or reply and I’d be glad to do so!
I haven’t finished listening to the whole three parter but wow, I’m enjoying what I’m hearing. I have much of my Mondays to catch up on important things like ConnectLearning, so I hope to get caught up today! I wish I could’ve popped down to the conference, but maybe next time!!! I hope you’ll be at NECC so maybe we can catch a cup of coffee or something–I’m helping with the IVC Showcase and various videoconferencing events and catching as much as I can of others’ presentations.
Cheers from Nashville!

Wow,
The vision of the future is a dreary one for many educators. While I envision students spending less time physically in the classroom, I really hope we do not lose the classroom. Students (especially k-8) need the nurturing and face-to-face assistance a teacher can provide. Technology can do wonderful things, but losing the human connections teachers make everyday with their students would be disasterous.
I realize that change is getting faster and faster but I decided to look at the opposite point of view. I looked at what I was doing with technology 10 years ago. I compared that to what is going on now and was very surprised.
Ten years ago I taught gifted and talented math to middle school students and was the computer guy during the rest of the day.
My students were just getting to see what high speed internet access was all about.
They accessed CD ROM towers connected to our network.
They used an Integrated Learning System on our network for math enrichment.
They used the traditional AppleWorks (at that time ClarisWorks) suite to create documents, illustrations, and spreadsheets.
Creating multiimedia content using Hyperstudio (I loved this tool!)
Analyzing satellite imagery as part of the Gaia Crossroads Project.
Creating presentations using PowerPoint.
Creating Web Pages using HTML.
I was fortunate enough to be the computer guy that got all the equipment and network in the school. Therefore my classroom was the computer lab. I had the luxury of teaching in a 1:1 environment from that time til today.
As I look at what’s happening 10 years later in 2005…
I’m in a new position as a technology integrator working in a middle school in Maine. Every student and teacher in my school has a laptop as part of the Maine Learning and Technology Initiative. I now spend my time trying to get as many teachers as I can on board with many of the tools I used 10 years ago plus the wonders that have come up through the years.
I see the changes that have occured over the years. I am especially thrilled with how the Internet has become more powerful with rich multimedia content and connected with blogs, wikis, and other web 2.0 apps. While I would love to teach in the classroom David so eloquently describes in this podcast, I think he’s about 10 years too soon. I think the classroom he describes is more the classroom of 2025. The unfortunate reality I have come to grips with is that change is tremendously slow in education-especially in the age of assessment aka NCLB.
I look forward to the classroom of the future. But let’s remember what children need more than anything else is a “teacher”. Let’s not throw away that archaic beast called the classroom.

Effective and fast penis enlargement is entirely possible with the right techniques used consistently and correctly, and you can even see real results within two to three weeks! I used specific yet very simple and easy-to-duplicate techniques to increase the size of my penis from an embarrassing 5.5 inches long and 5 inches around to over 8 inches long and exactly 6 inches around!

At home penis enlargement methods seem to be a topic that has taken on a life of its own, almost to water cooler type gossip status. The reasons for this are several, starting with the taboo nature of it all, mixed more prominently with the fact that male enhancement is a very real issue for most men. The health and research involved in the methods are more accessible than ever, and because of this it is wise to peek inside to that world for those wanting a larger penis.
