Episode 105: A Conversation with Clarence Fisher

March 31st, 2009

Clarence Fisher at TEDTalk Presentation
This is a photo that I took of Clarence at the Learning 2.0 conference in Shanghai

It was a cold wintry evening in Saskatoon, Saskatewan, walking to a nice Italian place with Clarence Fisher. I frankly can’t remember a more comfortable meal with conversation — and I think it had to do with the fact that Clarence and I both came from very small towns.

At any rate, after we finished our meals and listened to the expert recitation of the restaurant’s desert menu — focusing on the chocolate dishes (and resisting the temptation), I asked Clarence about the presentation that he and Dean Sharesky, Kathy Cassidy, and Darren Kuripatua had done at the iTSummit — Telling the New Story.

One of the ideas that Clarence shared that resonated with me was about how he has his own students do their quarterly reading evaluations. This is important, because to switches the responsibility to the student. Their learning contract becomes an arrangement with themselves, rather than a responsibility to the teacher. They are owning their learning, when they work on their own terms.

Enjoy!

I listened to the podcast “A Conversation with Clarence Fisher” and I agree with the point he made about the children being responsible for their learning. In my county we are having the children become more aware of their learning by putting standards in kid friendly language and having them keep logs about their learning. I see children bringing their computers or iPods in middle and high school but I do not see it working in elementary. In order for it to work in middle and high school, the administration, central office and possibly the school board would have to be in favorite of it. In elementary, we do a lot of content and would be overwhelmed with different types of computers if the child was just learning about the computer. i can see this being the next big thing.

I also liked his term “sandbox time’. As a Kindergarten teacher, my students have to have time to experience new materials before I can use them constructively in a lesson. It should be that way with technology also.

As I listened to Clarence Fisher describe the presentation, i was hoping he would elaborate on Kathy Cassidy’s “New Story” since he said she was a first grade teacher. I was hoping to hear the next new thing and where she was in technology with her students.

The information presented was timely and gives me some things to think about.
