Episode 87: De - Li - cious
September 23rd, 2007
I’m trying something different this time, a video blog, vlog, or video podcast. You name it. I purchased a rather inexpensive screen capture program a while back, so that I could include in my online handouts, more detailed versions of some of the demos I do in my presentations. The software is called, iShowU.
In this podcast, I demonstrate how to use Del.icio.us, an online social bookmarking service, making an account for Brenda and I, that we might use to keep recipes.
So enjoy!

Hi David,
great video. I wonder how you did the zoom-in? There is no such function in iShowU as far as I can see. Did you do it with the video editor? Which one do you ue?

The zoom feature is a Mac thing. It’s one of the most frequent questions I get after my conference presentations. For Mac users, go into Universal Settings, and switch on Zoom. It’s an accessibility thing. Then holding down and < +> will zoom in to where ever the mouse point is located. and < -> zooms back out.
Also and moving two-fingers up on the track pad will zoom in, and sliding two fingers down will zoom out. I find that a bit cumbersome, though…
Thanks for the comments.

Your timing is perfect! I’m teaching an online beginning course on the Read/Write Web. This week, we are exploring RSS, tags, and Social Bookmarking. When I plugged in my synched iPod this morning on the way to work, I was delighted to find your video podcast. It’s perfect to share with the participants in my class, along with the ones from last year’s K-12 Online Conference.
Connected learning… Your podcast title says it well. Thank you for contributing such rich resources.

[…] I think Animoto has lots of potential for classroom use as a simple way to introduce concepts or to tack on to the beginning of a digital story or multimedia presentation. I saw that David Warlick did this with his recent video tutorial of Del.icio.us. He used the movie he made of Edubloggercon to introduce his video. Very cool. The Del.icio.us workshop was excellent too! […]

Great video. I am particpating in a tech in education class and was introduced to this website. I am excited to use Del.icio.us! Thanks for the great information.

You did a great job of taking us through the steps of how to set up and use an account on Del.icio.us. I am confident I’ll be able to use it for many things… but before I do I need to go and get something to eat!

I *loved* the iShowU software! That was awesome. And the zoom, gosh it makes me want to switch back to Macs, just for that. I already use del.icio.us in my fanish life and have just started using it for classroom stuff. I love being able to search for multiple keywords in my own bookmarks and then searching again on del.icio.us at large.

I am taking a class on teaching technology and this is very interesting stuff. Again my eyes are opened to the wonders of technology.

Loved your use of IShowU. I downloaded it to try it out.
My only question is what did you use to capture the video of yourself. I use iMovie regularly, but it has all of the iMovie stuff around it so it takes up most of the screen. Your video was just a single window that had the video you were recording showing.
Thanks,
Leigh Zeitz

Thank you for creating a vodcast that is easy to follow and valuable.
I will be using this one to help my middle school students learn about social bookmarking, and the do’s of vodcasting.
I’ll also refer my teacher friends to this cast if they aren’t sure how to use delicious.
I’m a mac devotee who has been thrust into the PC lab! Is there any way to zoom easily on a PC? That, and screen shots are two features that I miss terribly.

This was great! I can’t imagine easier instruction on using this delicious. I’m a believer in using the Mac platform for this type of effort.

As a newbie to del.icio.us, I now have a much clearer idea of how to use tags on this site. Thanks for reinforcing what I already knew and teaching me something new as well.

I now have a much clearer understanding of how to use Del.icio.us. I think once I try it I will enjoy having all my information at my finger tips no matter what computer I am on.

I enjoyed everything about your Vodcast. Firstly, I like how you created it using iShowU, and I’m assuming Garage Band and iMovie. The Mac tools make Web 2.0 presentations a joy to create. I downloaded the trial version of iShowU and I am planning on buying the full version.
The next thing that was so great about this Vodcast was how easy your tutorial has made it to understand how social book marking using De-li-cious works. I really appreciated the instruction on using tags, that is a very helpful option. I am excited about using del.icio.us and sharing your site with other teachers for this and many other resources. Thank you for making the reality of not being a “Digital Native” and easier place to be, while helping to equip us to instruct and encourage our digital natives in how to be purposeful and successful in this digital age.
Your site rocks.
Thanks
Chris

I am scheduled to teach an in service session to teachers in my school on social bookmarking using Del.icio.us. Your podcast will be a great resource. You give clear, easy to follow directions for registering for an account and adding bookmarks. I have recently started using Del.icio.us myself and it has made my life so much easier. I have tried other online bookmarking sites before but they all seemed too complicated. As you said on your podcast, if it’s too complicated, I won’t use it. I am finding the use of Tags even more useful than being able to access my bookmarks from different computers. Tags keep me from having to search through hundreds of bookmarks to find where I put one. Tags are great for me to keep organized!

I have been using Del.icio.us for a couple of years now and it has changed the way I browse. It has been wonderful to build that information library you were talking about. I have hundreds of resources now at my fingertips. One of my favorite features is the pop out tags menu–it’s made del.icio.us even simpler for me.
I had a friend who linked his web page to del.icio.us and when we tagged items with his specific tags, they showed up on his web page. My husband uses Porta Portal in the classroom. The ad-free version is a little safer for elementary age students.
I am really enjoying iShowU and plan on using it as a resource to compliment inservice activities. Thanks!
